So I bought an iPhone 12 mini from Bell on Saturday. Here in Canada, telecom regulations prohibit the sale of carrier-locked devices, but Bell was allowed to put in a system where the phones are locked when shipped from Apple (to deter theft) , and unlocked as soon as the phone activates on a Bell SIM.

My issue is that this did not happen with mine. Bell support tells me that the phone is indicated as unlocked in their system. Apple Support tells me that the phone is still marked as carrier locked in their activation server. I'm not quite sure how this happens, but it is rather annoying since it will not let me add a second plan via eSIM, not use a SIM of another carrier for travel.

Has anybody see this there the carrier unlocked a phone but it is not reflected in Apple's server? I'm not too certain what to do, but Bell has essentially sold me locked phone, which is not only inconvenient, but also illegal here.

As I recall. When US carriers do an unlock. It can take several business days until Apple’s servers are updated.

This is probably the same in Canada. I’d give it a few days.

Edit: I’d also add. I don’t know if Apple has separate activation servers for Canada or just uses US servers. If US, today is a federal holiday and won’t count as a business day.

Just realized I never closed the thread. The phone never unlocked after 6 days, Bell said their servers listed it as unlocked, Apple confirmed that their servers have it as Carrier lock. I returned the phone for a refund and decided to stick with the tried and true smaller Pro for factor. My new 13 Pro arrived yesterday.
