Issue with dock and dual monitors

After unplugging my MacBook (Late 2008) from my Samsung External Monitor, my dock disappears and requires a "killall Dock" in Terminal to reappear. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks.

PS- Running 10.5.8 and it happens all the time.
