Hi all,

So I have a 2017 MacBook Pro. Less than a year of having it, I needed a new logic board (thankfully it was under warranty). Since having the repair though, the fans come on when I'm not really doing anything perhaps browsing the web or initially when on YouTube. Some times they come on only a little bit but other times they come on as though the laptop is going to take off! My laptop also feels warm to the touch. I use an external display and the laptop is closed stood in a stand.

I don't do anything like video editing or rendering - mainly emails and working on documents so nothing too intense. So I wonder if anyone can suggest if there may be an issue with the laptop or if it should do this and didn't before as the logic board needed replacing?

Since the laptop needed repairing I've lost all confidence in it. Comparing to my 2015 MBP, that never makes a noise and never gets hot!

For info, I've reset the SMC before perhaps two or three months ago. Not sure if I should do this again? Does it need to be done more than once?

Thanks in advance.

Ben

Were you using the same version of MacOS before and after the repair? There's a long thread here about people having trouble with their 16" MBPs getting hot and fans running when using external monitors, but I haven't followed to know if it's hardware or software related.

Take it back.

Whoever did the repair either didn't thermal paste the CPU properly (maybe didn't even bother to use new thermal paste) when they put your cooling solution onto the new system board, or otherwise screwed up.

The fan is ramping up to try and cool the CPU because the CPU is hot, but the CPU is hot because there's insufficient thermal conductivity into the heat-sink for the fan to extract. Let Apple know ASAP that since the repair this has been an issue, so they can rectify it.

I believe I've updated the OS since getting it back but come to think of it, before, I wasn't using an extended display so it could be that. I've been thinking about getting a MacMini and using that as they're designed for a display.

Thanks, I'll speak with Apple. It wasn't them but an authorised repair centre who, scratched the hell out of my laptop when I got it back. Thankfully it was in a hard case and it was only the case but if I didn't have the case, I'd have a ruined laptop!

Just thought I'd post an update. I bought the new Mac Mini and so far so good. It's been great! I love it! My laptop hasn't been too bad since not using an external display. I turned it on once and the fans all came on but, since then they've not done it. Not sure whey they did that but I've turned off some apps at start up etc. Just restarted it now and the fans came on for about 15/20 seconds then went off. I suspect maybe this is normal? I mean, my older MBP doesn't do that but... Who knows?

It's normal for some apps or startup conditions to cause the fans to spin up on start, so you're probably fine.

Just thought I'd let you all know. I sent my MBP back to the authorised reseller where I got it. The fans where driving me nuts when doing a simple task. They had it less than a week. Re-installed everything and installed a second new logic board and so far, so good! Didn't even spin the fans up when installing/downloading MS office or syncing my emails etc. something it would do before.

So, hopefuly it was just a case fo two bad logic boards... Or a botched first repair from their local repair centre.

Just need to get used to the keyboard now :D

Thanks for all the help and advice! :)

Stay safe!
