OS: 10.13.6
FCPX: 10.4.3

Sapphire Pulse Rx580 in a 4,1 flashed to 5,1 32GB ram

Everything works great, EXCEPT for Final cut which is unusable. Beach balls constantly. Clips import as black video.

Is this a known issue with the RX580 and the latest FCPX?

Full system specs:
4,1 flashed to 5,1 - latest boot rom
3.46ghz 12 core
48gb ram 6x8gb ECC - Hynix chips
Sapphire pulse rx580
Crucial 750gb mx300 ssd
Dell 27” monitor 2560x1600 over Display port - have also tried a 1080p monitor on HDMI
MacOS 10.13.6
Fcpx: 10.4.3

At this point I have removed all pcie cards from the system, except the gpu.

Should be the other way around. RX580 is known very good card for the latest FCPX.

I saw another report of someone having the exact same issue as me. Taking the 580 out solves it. Not sure what else to try.

No this is a fresh install.
Can you link to the other report you saw? Maybe we can identify a common thread.

Other questions:

What resolution are you running the card at?

What other cards do you have installed with the RX 580?

When you take out the 580, what other video card are you putting in its place?

My footage is straight out of my DJI phantom 4 Pro. 2.7k 60p

This post from June is exactly what I’m experiencing.
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/344/51349

Running a 27” dell at 2560x1600 via DisplayPort

Have a velocity duo with 2 crucial ssd
USB 3.1 card
USB 3.0 card
4x 4tb raid internal drives

In my case, my other card is a gt120 his looks to be 960.

I tried creating optimized versions, didn’t work. I haven’t tried transcoding outside of FCPX , but frankly if that’s the solution then I’ll have to find a different machine to edit on.

Thanks for the help so far guys, mich appreciated!

First thing I'd say is try importing clips from some other source, like from your phone. Does FCPX still beachball? Or is the problem related to the clips from your drone?

Just as a general troubleshooting step I'd try pulling all the other cards if feasible (maybe you can't pull the velocity if you're booting from it).

And if you have the time, maybe try an install of the Mojave Public Beta.

Pull out the GT120.

Pull out the GT120.
I only put the gt120 back in after I removed the 580 to test if the problem is the 580.

I originally thought that might be the case but he said he's running the 580, a Velocity Duo, a USB 3.0 card and a USB 3.1 card--that's 4, so I don't think he's got the GT120 in at the same time.
Correct, only the 580 OR the gt120

I’ll try some other footage, but my 2014 iMac has no problem with these files.

I’ll go through it and remove the cards. I though initially maybe it was the power draw of all the cards and the 580, but it seems like it’s should be fine based on total wattage.

I will try the Mojave beta, that’s a good idea.

Can anyone with a pulse rx580 and a 4,1 confirm FCPX is working 100% with the latest update?

Thanks for the ideas!

I am using a 2009 flashed 5,1 with the Sapphire PULSE RX580. FCPX works flawlessly with in the latest High Sierra.

Thanks for the reply. At least I know it should work.

I’ll do some more trouble shooting this evening. Everything else has been great with this machine, except this one show stopping issue.

Thanks!

For me, the issue more than likely lies with the Velocity Duo and/or Crucial SSDs. I’m not a fan of either.

Based on nothing scientific, just a hunch.

For info, a single MX500 2TB on a Sonnet TempoSSD (HFS+) working fine in High Sierra and FCPX.

Ok, I’ve spent the evening troubleshooting and I’m... nowhere.

Removed all pcie cards, disconnected all peripherals, zapped PRAM.

Still no go. I put the gt120 back in just to prove I’m not crazy and it just works. Video pops up in FCP like it should and I can scrub through the footage just fine.

One might think the card is bad, but it works perfectly otherwise. Ran cinebench just fine, got like 135000 in Geekbench. So, I’m running out of ideas.

The strange thing is, I can play back the footage in preview just fine with the 580. No jitters or dropped frames, but drag the footage into FCP and it’s all black, no scrubbing and beach balls all over the place.

I’m going to reinstall High Sierra onto a single ssd and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks again to all who have contributed to helping me. Much appreciated!

Have you tried an mp4 from a different source, like from an iPhone or something? It really would be valuable to your troubleshooting process to know if it's just certain files/codec that it's choking on, or all videos. Alternately, you could post a short clip from your drone on the net and maybe others running the same card/version of FCPX can see if they get the same symptoms.

Like I mentioned before, might also be worth trying Mojave.

Yes, if you can post a short sample video and the exact steps on how to tigger the bug. I will do the test and report back.

I simply drop the footage into a new project. I have tried it both with leaving it in place and copying to library. Also tried creating optimized and not.

What I usually get is a black preview thumbnail, but sometimes it will give me a normal looking thumbnail. What I can never do though is play back the footage in Fcpx. No scrubbing and hitting the space bar causes a beach ball. I will have to force close the program usually.
[doublepost=1532447133][/doublepost]also, I have updated the OP with full specs in case it triggers any ideas.

Thank you, I appreciate the help. I am going to import some video from my iPhone, will report back.

I don’t have a problem testing it in beta software, but my hope was to put this machine in my workflow and it has to be completely stable for that, so not sure if it’s worth it.

May I know what’s your project setting?

Did you try to remove the FCPX library and create a new one? Just in case there is some permission issue.

1080p 30fps

Yes I’ve tried in three different brand new libraries, this latest because I reinstalled the OS.

Just tried with a short clip from my 7+, same deal.

So, you just install a clean OS, and install FCPX (but not recovery from Time Machine / backup)?

Any plugin in FCPX?
