iPod touch Issue with iPod 2g and iTunes

So my brother's iPod touch 2g has completely stopped working. It won't turn on (and I know it was nearly full this morning) and it won't connect to iTunes (or even be detectable on iTunes). I'm running OS X 10.7.1, and iOS 4.2.1. I believe the warranty has expired, so does anyone know what I can do?

Plug in the charger to the iPod and hold down the power and home button for 15 seconds.
