issue with MacBook Pro retina 13 / 2014 /folder with question mark

Hello to Everyone,

i have been reading a lot on your great forum related to my issue,
but i'm still stuck with a issue coming "randomly" (i can't see if linked to hibernating, but definitely not linked to workload of the laptop as it happens with no app open, or heat, ....)

In a nutshell:

- Macbook pro 13 retina / in system ...
- i had issues with the original hard drive (question mark folder) and decided to buy an owc aura x2 240gb
- after a lot of trys, question mark folder on th our disk as well, i succeeded in installing catalina and now big sur on the new hard drive (by booting on an external key...)

it has worked a few times but i was getting after a while the panic error : " panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8019583d06): nvme: "Fatal error occurred. CSTS=0xffffffff US[1]=0x0 US[0]=0x6 VID=0xffff DID=0xffff"

(I have already done the following which i read in the sticky notes, with no success:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 standby 0 autopoweroff 0)

Then, it might take a dozen reboot to not get the folder with the question mark, and when i sometimes restart with apple+option+r, i don't see the Aura disk.

After many restarts, i get it started and enter Big sur, then it works for a while and get agin the panic error ...

and now i can't start my computer any more, always the folder with the question mark after 30-40 tries ....

I would love to find a way to solve tis and get my laptop back, so any help is welcome !

What is the bootrom on the MacBook? If you don't recall, was it running High Sierra off the stock SSD?

Hello Audit13 !

i checked after installed mojave, and i had 162.0.0.0.0. Then is succeeded instanlling big sur, it worked a bit with panic error after some time and now i can’t restart ...
If you have any idea, i would really welcome it

The latest bootrom for your MacBook is 429.0.0.0.

Is there a firmware update for the OWC drive?

Thanks ! That’s a big difference in the boot rom version.

when you talk abiut a firmware update, what do you mean exactly ?
Maybe another question, would there be a ssd brand that i would be sure works with this mac so that i could make sure there is no probleme woth the motherboard ?

Some NVMe drives have a EPROM controller chip that contains software to manage the drive functions.Check the owc site for possible updates to the firmware.
