The microphone/microphones are not working properly. Voice Memos are recording at nearly an inaudible volume. FaceTime calls are similarly almost inaudible for the participant on the other end. Making a video recording with the camera is...interesting. Every time I make one, the first second has that same almost inaudible volume level, but then the microphone turns on, and I get the sort of audio quality and volume I expect.

I'm on my second 10th generation iPad in four days, and I've had the same problem with both. I returned my first one, believe it was defective, only to have the same problem with the second. I wonder if it's a hardware problem, or if it's fixable by software. Is anyone else having the same problem? Have you seen this reported elsewhere? I figure if I had the same issue on two brand new iPads (blue, 64gb, wifi, upgraded quickly to 16.1 iPad OS by the way), it might be not just me.

Edit: to clarify, I am NOT using a bluetooth device, and I made sure to turn off bluetooth and run the same tests, with the same results. My FaceTime call worked perfectly with AirPods, but that's an external microphone.

I had the same problem and did the same thing.
At the apple store they gave me a new one and we tried together, it worked just fine.
Tried again at home, it wasn't working.
The only difference was that I had applied a screen protector.
I tried removing it and the problem disappeared.
If you have a screen protector try removing it.
But I cannot understand how that is possible. there is no microphone of the screen.

Whoa. That's wild. I did install a glass screen protector on my iPad. But even if that's the issue, I want to be able to use a screen protector.

Me too. So I just bought one with a notch for the camera.
Btw I found out that there is indeed a microphone, just on the right of the front camera.

Just thought I would chime in. I had the same problem and I can confirm the issue was a screen protector I bought that blocked the microphone up by the camera. Once I removed it, the problem went way. I didn’t even know the microphone was there. And of course they sell notched screen protectors, which I bought and am waiting for. I wonder if I can get my money back for the other one I didn’t use.

Yea, that pinhole mic is damn near invisible.. I dislike notched screen covers, this one seems unavoidable.

Yep - as you guys discovered:

So glad I googled this and thank you for your input. I’d tried everything from taking off Bluetooth to resetting the iPad. Was going to take the iPad back and complain but as soon as I took off the screen protector all was ok. Who’d thought the Mike was there!

Thanks you guys. Whoever figured this out, and posted it is a hero! I had the same problem, turned in my brand new iPad and then had the same issue with the new one! I thought maybe all the yellow 10 th gen iPads were bad. Got a different screen protector and it’s all good! Can you hear me now?
