I’m trying to reduce the amount of chargers and cables when travelling so I’ve invested in a usb c Apple Watch charger so I can charge my watch from my iPad when I’m asleep.

In my theory this should have worked perfectly and just charged till the morning. However when I place the watch on the magnet charger it charges for a few seconds then seems to disconnect from the charger and stop charging. Then it enters a loop of charging and not charging.
I’ve tried swapping the usb around and placing the watch in different orientations but it still seems to happen.
Has anyone else had this issue?

I doubt if an iPad can provide enough power (amps) to charge anything, but I admit I have never tried. Since you will still need to charge your iPad when traveling, you can likely use the same charger you use for your iPad to charge your Watch using the USB-C Watch charger. So you don't need to bring along any more than you would currently.

When the iPad Pro came out, apple advertised as a big feature that you could charge your phone through the usb c port. So yeah. I think an Apple Watch should’ve been ok

So I understand. You have invested in the USB C cable to reduce the amount of chargers you travel with. You wish to charge the watch from the ipad, (assuming ipad pro). What are you using to charge the ipad pro? couldn't you use the ipad pro charger to charge your watch?

I could do this, but i was unsure if the 18W would damage the battery of the watch....

It is an iPad Pro, just for the confirmation ahah!

I'm sure it would not damage anything, these devices only draw as much power as they are programmed to handle.
On the other hand I agree with you, Apple made a big deal out of this functionality and therefore it should work as advertised.

Apple's page does say that you can charge an Apple Watch from the USB-C port on an iPad Pro (2018) so it should work: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209186#chargeout

As for the plug-in charger, as noted up-thread, the device will use only the power it needs. So like bruinsrme, I use my 87W MacBook Pro charger to charge my 15" MBP, my 12.9" iPad Pro (2018), my iPhone 11 Pro Max and my Series 4 Apple Watch. Each device draws only as much power as it needs, so there is no worry about overloading the device.

Did you ever find a solution to this?? My Apple watch series 3 is still disconnecting when charging from my iPad Pro 2018. Unless the screen is unlocked, then it doesn’t disconnect.
