Actually, a lack of a SIM card shouldn't matter because I am using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. (Plus I remember that at work last year around this time, a co-worker airdropped a bunch of photos that I took to her phone in a matter of seconds.)

I'm just too dumb to know how to Airdrop?!

You only need Wifi and Bluetooth, so not having cellular should not be a problem.

Okay, so it sounds like I should see my rMBP come up as a "Contact" on my iPhone?

I feel like I'm close to getting this to work, but am just missing a few key steps...

This is what you should see on your Mac, except it should be your ID from your iPhone of course :)

On your phone it should look like this

I don't understand what I am looking at...

Is that Finder?

I don't have an Airdrop icon in Fidner.

Is there an Airdrop application that I have to turn on?

On my rMBP, under Settings > Sharing do I need to adjust some things there?

I think something that I set to lock down my rMBP is maybe causing the issue?

Go into Finder preferences and make sure Airdrop is turned on under the Sidebar tab

Okay, when I do that, on my rMBP I now see "user1's iPhone"...

Now what do I do?

Also, how do I know if I am seeing my iPhone 11 Pro Max or my iPhone 6S Plus?

You also need to turn your VPN off.

Yes, I disabled my VPN and firewall.

On my rMBP, under Airdrop, I see "user1's iPhone" but it is gray...

And in my iPhone 11, when I go into Photos, choose a video, and then click on the icon that looks like a square with an up arrow, I get a screen with the video and a bunch of choices.

If I choose Airdrop, I get another screen that says "No People Found"

(By the way, I am at the library, and I set thimgs to discoverable by all - I forget where - and I hope thatd pesn't let someone else do something nefarious while I'm trying to figure all of this out?!)

Erm turn your 6S off :)

Then we couldn't talk as I'm still using my iPhone 6S Plus as my personal hotspot!

I went into each iPhone under Settings > About and I can see their names there.

So I am still stuck not being able to see my rMBP from my iPhone 11 Pro Max...

For Airdrop to work you have to turn personal hotspot off, this may be the problem. I am presuming that either your 11 Pro or Mac is using personal hotspot on your 6S.

Right now I am typing on my old MBP which is tethered to my iPhone 6S Plus's personal hotspot as that is the only phone that has a SIM card.

So our conversation right now should be separate from what I am trying to do between my iPhone 11 Pro Max with not SIM card and my rMBP.

Follow my bird's nest? :) (iPhone 11 Pro Max ===> rMBP, iPhone 6S Plus ===> old MBP)

Or is the personal hotspot on my iPhone 6S Plus causeing issues with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth between my iPhone 11 Pro Max and my rMBP?

Where do I go to see that?

Go into Photos App select a photo click the share sheet button. you should see a Airdrop icon in a row of App icons at the bottom - click that and it will show you contacts that you can send the photo too.

On my rMBP, under Finder > Airdrop, I see "user1's iPhone" with a gray avatar.

So does that mean that my rMBP sees my iPhone 11 Pro Max?

Do I have to do anything else from my rMBP's side?

Isn't there a generic way to see if my iPhone 11 Pro max can see my rMBP via Airdrop?

I don't see an Airdrop app or way to navigate to Airdrop on my iPhone like I can in Finder on my rMBP...

on iOS Airdrop works through the share sheet. Might be worth trying if you can send a file from your Mac to your iPhone - drag a small text file onto the iPhone icon in Airdrop in finder.

That worked - I even got a funky, space-aged beep when I did it!

But I don't see how to transfer things from my iPhone 11 Pro Max to my rMBP.

In Photos, I am NOT seeing my rMBP as a contact...

It's like my rMBP can see my iPhone 11 Pro Max, but not the other way around?!

If you can't see the other device in AirDrop
Make sure that your devices meet these requirements:
  • Both devices are within 30 feet (9 metres) of each other and have WiFi and Bluetooth turned on.
  • Each Mac was introduced in 2012 or later (excluding the 2012 Mac Pro) and is using OS X Yosemite or later. To find out, choose Apple menu  > About This Mac.
  • Each iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is using iOS 7 or later, with Personal Hotspot turned off.
Make sure that your devices can receive AirDrop requests:
  • Choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder, then tick the ”Allow me to be discovered by” setting in the AirDrop window. iPhone, iPad and iPod touch have a similar setting. If set to receive from Contacts Only, both devices must be signed in to iCloud, and the email address or phone number associated with the sender's Apple ID must be in the Contacts app of the receiving device.
  • Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy. Click the Firewall tab, then click the lock
and enter your administrator password when prompted. Click Firewall Options, then deselect “Block all incoming connections”.
From the Apple support doc.

If the above does not work, I suggest you use the tried and tested 'fixes 90% of all IT problems' and turn both devices off and on again.

I think my firewall settings may have been the culprit... (I told you I had things really locked down!!)

Just went in now to a small video, and when I chose that share icon and chose Airdrop I finally saw my rMBP.

However when I tapped on my rMBP in my iPhone, it is flashing "Connecting" and has been for like 2 minutes...

Is there still a conenction issue?

Or is it trying to transfer the video I chose?

Not sure what is going on....
