A few times in the past week I have come down in the morning to find my MP in what appears to be an unresponsive sleep. The light on the power button slowly cycles between on and off however the system is unresponsive to keyboard or mouse. I have to push and hold the power button which turns the machine off and then turn it back on. In power settings its set to never go to sleep. The system is connected to an APC UPS which according to the icon at the top of the screen is functioning. The system is up to date running 10.8.2 any ideas as to what might be going on? When I power the machine on after finding it like this it does not say that it recovered from a crash or anything like that. The system has 5 standard 3.5" hard drives as well as an SSD and a bluray drive. It has an AMD5770 driving three 23" LCD's.

mac pro 3,1 crashing

hi

i've got a early 2008 MP and have some random hangs etc. too

Have you checked the console for crash reports? That would be my first step to see if there is any evidence of what is going on. (applications/utilities/console)

I recently had lots of crashes after putting mountain lion on, ended up giving it a good clean and reseating the RAM, as well as running Remember to see if any ram issues popped up. You can always try the apple hardware test to test things as well. I was getting sporadic ram failures so I tried swapping sticks around.

hope this helps :)- would be interested to hear how you get on, I've never got to the root cause of my system hanging :(

best of luck

I'm selling my Mac Pro 2008 - it was great machine, but 6 memory failures out of 8 is too much for me.

My old Mac Pro 2008 was taking about 200W when idle of which 60W was taken by RAM, my current Mac Pro 2009 is taking only 130W and RAM is taking only 3W !

Thanks, didn't really see anything in the console logs that jumped out at me. I don't think its RAM related because I have no other symptoms, no freezing or hanging or anything that might make me think its the RAM. It happens only once and awhile, but its odd.

Hello Ashman70,

The unresponsive sleep issue is, from what i can tell and what i have read, is primarily an issue with Mountain Lion. Other 10.8 users are experiencing this same issue, regardless of their hardware.

I too have a MP 3.1 2008 (though i have done several upgrades recently) and this has happened to me three times since i installed mountain lion.

As for the power usage, i use 150-180W it would seem, and my 14gigs of ram use about 50W... but that said i do have a ATI radeon 6870 so i would assume that thing takes a bit more power than the stock radeon 2800...

I have found that setting the sleep time for less, turning off sleeping the HD when idle, and simply making sure to shut my comp down when not using it has been quite helpful. That said i use an SSD drive now, so booting takes about 7 seconds.

Staying with Snow Leopard on my MP 3,1 for as long as possible. Too many issues in ML for me to want. Add that to Rosetta removal and I have no wish to update until I have good reason and proof of bug fixes.

What are you looking to get out of the old Mac Pro?

Was running handbrake last night with about 25 dvd's queued, came down this morning and my machine had rebooted with this crash report. Can anyone tell what might of caused it to reboot? Also, I never have my Mac set to sleep, so the unresponsive sleep issue with ML would only affect people who have their Mac set to sleep, no?

Yes they were, that must of reset after I upgraded to ML, thanks for catching that. Changed it now, hopefully my problems will go away.

Cheers!
