Apple has approved lots of other maps applications. I have Co-Pilot Live that I used for turn-by-turn. Garmin and Tom-Tom also have similar apps.

I'm not making any prognostications, just wondering. The one thing I do remember was a photo app that repurposed a volume button for taking photos, acting as the trigger. Apple banned it because it broke the UI paradigm (thou shalt not remap and repurpose) only to later bring out that very same feature, I think it was in ios4?

What other examples have we seen of Apple incorporating functionality into the OS that used to be available only in apps? Can any predictions be made based on prior experience?

Can we have a rational discussion with pros and cons or do we only engage in unquestioning praise?
Rational? On matters that involve personal preference?

Pros and cons are easily subjective matters.

I don't see how iamthekiller's post heaps unquestioning praise. There are plenty who complain to complain. That statement doesn't mean that there aren't valid complaints out there.

I like the iphone. It's the best option on the market right now.
...and that is a perfect example of what I mean. It's best for you. It's also best for others. However, it is not universally best. If your assumption is that your preferences rationally define what's best then there's no way to have a rational discussion. Your OP is full of plenty more examples.

Would it even be approved? Apps that duplicate native functionality are seldom approved. Still not sure how Opera made it.

I've used the web version of Maps, it's nowhere near as good as native was.

One other thing that surprises me, the navigation doesn't pause what's playing when it speaks, just mutes it. That would have made more sense. That's one of those little touches. For example, the way audio stops playing if the headphone jack is pulled, that's a perfect little touch. The way audio will suspend during a phone call and seamlessly resume, that's a perfect touch. Same with how audio playback is bookmarked when you interrupt play and resumes when you reload the music app, even if it's been offloaded from active RAM. The Overdrive app (used for ebook and audiobooks from libraries) has had a bug for the last two years where it refuses to bookmark your place except when you use the 15 second rewind button. Any time I want to suspend listening I have to hit the jog or it will have a 50% chance of losing my spot and resetting to the last rewind. That's not Apple's fault, of course, but a perfect example of sloppy design work.

Normal people also have friends and might want to put music on their computer or take music off of it. Why, here's my phone! But wait, I forgot to transfer the music to my usb keychain at home so no, we can't share. Normal people might also have laptops they take on the road with a bigger PC at home.

so? just sync from your laptop

oh noes, it's not core i7 with 5 video cards. its too slow

Do you realize how asinine that is? My mac mini resides under my television. My laptop is a cheap Windows box. The mini is my media center box. That's where all my music resides unless I take it elsewhere.

wifi sync?

using a computer on your TV is like trying to pound a small nail with a sledgehammer. PC or Mac with apple TV with iOS device as a remote is so much easier
