I was installing the VisionOS simulator and when it was installing that package in Xcode I saw this (see photo.)

So at one point Apple was calling it xrOS. I am glad they decided to call it VisionOS.

The xrOS name is referenced in many of the sessions. I don’t think they ever intended to use this name, because “xr” is general and used by many companies. I think they ended up using in the sessions to prevent the real name from leaking, since they had to record these in advance. Maybe the references in code were kept for consistency?

Yeah, we knew this at least 6 months ago from Gurman. It was a placeholder for sure.

From his info back in early 2022, it was basically down to Vision or Reality. Vision is more broad and translates easier.

Apple is not a company that would reveal to anyone that does not need to know the marketting name until they had to. I had great suspicions when the name 'leaked' 6+ months ago, the name did not sound like an Apple name - people were shaking their heads about it... The fact a few people failed or missed replacing all the versions of it - is a bit surprising... but it would have been more surprising if it was actually that name for it and it was communicated 6 months ago.

We literally knew the Apple Vision name in January 2022. Marketing names don't just get decided at the last minute. Much research is done before hand to determine which names are trademarked and which names resonate with consumers.

I mean they always name the OS apps after the product. It was probably called xrOS until marketing decided on calling the headset product category the Vision.
