It seams to be that you think that you are the only one who knows what the benchmark is. Or better, that the regulators It’s kind of an arrogance way to go about.
It's called an opinion.
Anyway, still regardless regulators can take issue with it if it affects the balance of power between users and suppliers. I’m sure they had plenty of complaints before they even decided testing.
Is that a fact or opinion? Define plenty. 1,10, 100, thousand, million?

The concern about the water resistance marketing is not new. In this case, the devices under test, happened that it did not even met IP68 expectations.
You don't know that. The iphone 12 is certified for ip68, if you disagree you can take it up with https://www.nema.org/standards/view...-degrees-of-protection-provided-by-enclosures

This is an interesting non-Apple link, in that it illustrates the issues with water resistance and smartphones

Every manufacturer gives ideal condition numbers. When they sell a FIAT that gets 40 mpg, isn't that on a test track with a professional driver and no wind?

Yep when I tell my teenager not to get her phone wet she says don’t worry it’s water proof. Tell that to apple when it stops working.
Exactly!

Apple's OFFICIAL iPhone 12 info page (see bottom #4):

4. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are splash, water, and dust resistant and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes). Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage not covered under warranty.

I had a recent Apple Watch short circuit (got very hot and stopped working entirely) while swimming. The Apple Genius said water damage wasn't covered - which was incredible as the watch has a swimming workout tracking!

When I showed them the Apple Website advertising swimming tracking, they replaced the Watch.
They likely did that to appease you. Because water damage is explicitly not covered

I hope you went all Karen on them at the Apple store because it's warranted.... err, I guess it wasn't literally, but ridiculous nonetheless.

I swear there was a Verizon or Sprint iPhone commercial (Made by Apple) where someone was taking pictures under water while swimming in a pool, but I can't find it.

BUT.... I did find the commercial where they throw a big ass water balloon at an iPhone 7:
I didn’t even bother to take it in for repair because they would claim it’s out of warranty and ask for a ridiculous close-to-buying-new price for a refurb. I don’t know if I should try the telephone support or customer relations and take my chances with them...

New ad running on Italian TV: for half of the ad time (15 seconds, from 00:10 to 00:25), almost one fifth of the screen is devoted to a long disclaimer explaining that the iPhone is water resistant up to 30min at 6m, that Apple’s limited 1-year warranty doesn’t cover damages derived from conditions not included in the IP68 rating BUT said damages COULD be covered by the legally mandated 2-year conformity warranty (to be honored by the seller, which coincides with Apple only for iPhones directly sold in Apple retail and online stores)
