I am worried about ATT looking specifically for tether.com requests and then deduces you must be tethering and bye-bye my unlimited data plan

This is why I didn't buy the app. I figured it would be pulled and the people who had it could keep it, but it is very simple for at&t to produce reports on what device requests data from that domain and move that device to a tether plan.

I agree with this. However, people innocently purchased an approved application from the app store. It would be pretty ugly to do that to people.

If you're naive enough to fork out money for anything, without questioning the cost justifcation associated with that product... have fun pissing away your money, that's all I can say.

Some of us care to know we aren't being ripped off or wasting our money. And in the case of Data Plans a separate Tether Plan is a rip-off... no matter how you present it.

+1, completely agree with you!

I don't think it's fair that the author of this app basically got rich because Apple made a special exception just for him.

If tethering apps were allowed, there's be dozens of them, all competing and making less money individually than this app did. If anything Apple should refund everyone who bought the app and not pay the author a single cent..

what kind of new breed of douche are you?? how can you look at this situation and blame the app author!? Clearly the bad guy is Apple here. Apple is turning out to be the bad guy more and more. Soon it'll be time to occupy the apple store w/o the intent to fork over $300.

Glad I grabbed a copy before it got pulled! Now I'll have it on those extremely rare occasions where I'll need it for 30 seconds to send an email in the middle of the holler. Awesome.

Yet you'll stick with your iPhone and current carrier and won't switch to one with more favorable terms/plans. As long as we know where your priorities are.

From my point of view, you're guilty of the same thing you're accusing him of.

Not free?

I thought tethering was free everywhere. It has always been included in my contract so I actually had a hard time understanding the purpose of this app. I thought it offered some kind of extra features over regular tethering.

Why would the carrier care if you tether? Either you have a cap or not. Should not matter how you use your connection, it's YOUR connection which you PAID for.

This would never be accepted by customers here...

I understand capitalistic-based carriers and their ultimate goal of churning profits, but the current pyramid is outdated and needs reforming. Lets take texting plans for example.. $20 for unlimited texting? Each text message averages at 2Kb which means you can fit 5,120 text messages on a 10MB data plan. Now this 10Mb data plan only costs $5. Keep in mind I text A LOT and only manage to send about 2,100 text messages a month.

$20 for 'unlimited' text messaging.

$5 for 5,120(Which for 9/10 people is unlimited) text messages.

So in total you would be saving on average $180 a year before state tax.

I agree and disagree. First, my analogy would be: the electric company charges me more because I installed another outlet in my house...or my water company charges me more because I installed an additional sink.
...

Actually you're wrong on a couple of issues - almost all wireless systems (GSM, 3G etc), are packet switched, not circuit switched, so the amount of time on that a connection is "on", is not that meaningful, mainly the amount of data use determines the network occupancy.

My Scandinavian carrier charges me about 15usd /month (including 25% sales tax). I have to pay for voice and SMS, but 1GB of data is included. They don't care what or how I use the data. I don't bother streaming, but for working on my MBA, writing some emails when at a conference it's fine.

For the record that 15usd/month also means that the phone, in my case a HTC Desire, is unsubsidized full price, i.e. 750usd (again 25% sales tax), but no other fees, I can put any SIM in, cancel my contract, whatever.

We are just pawns in their corporate games...

I don't think it was a mistake. Apple seemed to understand exactly what it did before they put it in the store.

My guess is that they were pushing the limits with the carriers to see if they complained. Of course, they did, but perhaps Apple wanted to make them have to complain, just to let them know that Apple could totally allow this if they wanted to.

Perhaps some future pricing negotiations are going on right now and Apple wanted to let them know who really has the power right now.

I dunno. Far fetched? Maybe. Or maybe not.

You are totally correct. Apple knows what it is doing. They are just playing their corporate power games. And we all rush around like headless chickens chasing after the scraps. I've had enough. No I haven't. I like the toys. I'll put up with their games. But one day. And I hope it's soon. They'll start dancing to our tune... ;-)

Of course!

I'm sure Apple has the same opinion as all of us about the stupidity of the carriers.

And of course they want to change all that. It will only take a little time but in the end the carriers will be in the same boat as the typesetters after the desktop publishing revolution…

(Add to this boat music labels of course! ;)
