All iPads "It's been way to long" what did it mean?

Thought it was a clearly a joke about them just having the iPhone 6/Watch event. It's like when you see someone you were just with and they say, "Long time no see," as a joke.

But haven't they been doing an iPad event just a month or 2 after the iPhone event for at least a few years now? That "joke" would have been funny and ironic the first time they had two product line launches so near, but now it would be like commenting on how close 7 o'clock is to 8. It's way too late to be clever, so I doubt that's what they were going for.
