Hi there ...

Only one app can be shown on the desktop at any given time. If I click an app's icon it switches to that app but any other app on the desktop disappears!

Started 6 weeks ago and disappeared after update to 10.13.2

Now its back. 🙁

I hope that somebody can help.
 
You appear to be in single-app mode. It's actually a feature introduced in, if not the very first release of OS X, then the subsequent one. I don't know why it's activated on your system like that. There certainly are other ways of fixing your issue, but the first one I can think of is to download OnyX and use that to revert the behaviour. It's got a toggle for Single App mode

Found it ... a little app that I installed long time ago, never really used seemed to cause the problem.
Hides.app - was updated Dec. 30 - has a focus mode that was enabled. 😵
