Only time I think you would need that much vram is if you play video games at full resolution. The 9700 isn't really capable of running Doom3 or other memory intensive games at full resolution.

It's Official... 128mb vram is a must have upgrade

d) Massive CoreImage use (FCP, DSP, Motion... obviously speculation that they will use CoreImage).
Otherwise it comes down to actual processing power of the card.

We don't know what core image will require at this point. Its definately true that 128mb is better than 64mb and OSX Tiger will use the graphics memory to render the OS and images so to say that it will never use more than 64mb before the os is out is a bit presumptuous. I think between the monitor, quartz extreme, core image, and core video we can expect 128mb to not be enough vram.
