Since all the prices of each Watch/band combo as well as individual bands are clearly marked on Apple Watch Store, it's likely not a secret.

I didn't know. When I used the Apple Store app the way it was laid out made it look confusing in terms of how they're priced

It gives the same price whether you select 38mm or 42mm. Don't see how confusing that can be.
