the iPad needs to be off to charge. It will not charge if it's on. That has been confirmed.

Charges fine on my 2009 Mac Pro....even when the iPad is "on".

If you have a sufficiently new Mac it will (using a port on the Mac itself).

I have the newest 17" MacBook pro and it sustains the ipads battery but dissent charge it.

Simple solution.. get 3 "Y" usb adapters and plug the first two into four usb ports then the last y adapter into those 2 then into the iPad, then you'll get the 2amp current 😀

I have a MBP which of course has just two USB ports. One port is in use by my time machine drive. The other port is for the powered USB hub. Despite the fact that it's powered, it's not enough to charge it 🙁

You wouldn't try charging a netbook over USB...they (the ipad) simply draws too much power. It's not a big deal, just plug it in to the charger.

It needs a voltage above the standard USB specification.
It's because of how strong the iPad's battery is.

It needs a higher WATTAGE, USB is and always will be 5 volts no way to change that without making a different connector, otherwise people would be frying every older USB device they plug into this "new" "high-voltage" USB port

I think the issue here isn't that we're all shocked and appalled by the inability of a USB port to charge a huge battery. The issue is that we charge our iphones on USB all the time (and thus get used to doing it that way), and apple should be more clear ahead of time that "some computers may not charge the ipad when it is turned on". Neat device, but I'm saving that $500 towards the next uMBP revision.

Anyone tried those "Y cables" which usually provide more power to external hard drives? It should work with the ipad too.
