I'm having a tough time deciding whether to upgrade to OS 3 on my iPhone 3G again. Here are some pros and cons for you:

2.2.1 Pros:
Fast
Stable
Built for older hardware
Smooth graphics performance
Better UI

2.2.1 Cons:
Typing in Safari is slower and laggier
Can't easily close the last page in Safari
No copy and paste
No push
No landscape texting/email
Can't sync notes
More and more apps are 3.0 only (iDisk)

OS 3 Pros:
Copy and Paste (plus tons of hidden features)
Less lag in Safair
Landscape keyboard in most Apple apps
Push support
Ability to send multiple texts without waiting
Can close the last Safari page easily
Stereo Bluetooth
Easier App Store navigation
Data detectors for notes
Able to sync notes

OS 3 Cons:
Performance is degraded
Graphics for opening apps aren't as smooth
Seems to stutter more often
UI is sloppier (various UI glitches)
Voice Memos takes up another space on the springboard
GPS hardly works or doesn't work at all on the 3G
Can't clear a recent search in Maps without opening keyboard
Graphic animations are choppier in most places
Messages sending bar covers up persons name
OS bogs down even more when playing music and doing other things at the same time
3.0 was optimized for the iPhone 3GS

I can't decide what I want because I waited an entire year to have push notifications but I didn't want it at the expense of performance loss. Seems like 3.0's main feature is to convince people to buy the iPhone 3GS. You know?

Upgrade to 3.0
Apple would never make a software update perform worse than the previous OS.

It's in everyone's head, they look for something to be wrong so they find it.
Do what you want.

3.1 is supposedly slated for end of the month/early sept so maybe wait for that one.

The sending bar in the Messages app is really a con? Because that's a huge pro for me hmmm.

Well, I have a 3G and I think it's definitely worth it to upgrade, even though there are UI glitches (like going to Spotlight, there's always this split second lag with the transition and the page appears in its entirety out of no where or in the Messages app when the text goes above the line of sight) and the GPS is OFF now, but still worth it for everything else.

Spaz,
I would rather have my iPhone be a little laggy, and have over 100 new features VS having a fast iPhone missing out on 100 new awsome features. wait for 3.1, maybe that will help.

Hahaha, good one. 3.0 is a bit slower than 2 was. Screen transitions aren't as smooth as they used to be.

You are really annoying. Upgrade to 3.0 and leave the forum. Use your iPhone when you need to and enjoy life. Seriously, go outside. Play a sport. If you need to contact someone, use your iPhone, but if not just continue on with life. Stop analyzing insignificant decisions so much.

I feel your pain TS, I have to upgrade my girl's 3G to 3.01 to fix the SMS bug and that lasg is going to piss her off. Gonna have to listen to some bitching. :D

Are you on Apple's development team? Or how else do you know that 3.0 was optimized for 3GS? Just because the 3GS is a lot faster than the 3G using 3.0 that has nothing to say for which device 3.0 was optimized for. In fact, it could very well tell you that it was optimized for 3G and hence it's ridiculously fast on the 3GS. All of my friends' 3G's are perfectly fine; slower than my 3GS but I'm fairly certain that's more due to the fact that the internals are so much better. Do yourself a favor and stop wasting brain space thinking about this, upgrade to 3.0. Or don't make useless posts asking for advice because I don't see why anyone in their right mind would tell you not to upgrade and get all the new features..

3G Owners... wasn't 2.2.1 way better than 3.0?

Anyone still using 2.2.1?

(I used stardates because I don't think this person is from this world):D

And the list goes on. Seems like you don't even remember your own post. Is that why your're TheSpaz? (Suggestion, drop the "The"):D

TheSpaz...I have a 3G and I am loving 3.0. Of course, I always like to keep my phone up to date though so anyway...

you tried 3.0 already and weren't happy. why would you think this time would be any different?

thats what im thinking. i mean did you or did you not post this spaz?

First of all... lemme start off by saying... I have a poor old iPhone 3G.

I upgraded to 3.0 GM the day it came out and last week I downgraded back to 2.2.1 and lemme tell you... it's like having a new iPhone again.

3.0 was slow and laggy for me. The animations were jerky. Even the animation for launching 3rd party apps looked like they just snapped into place (home screen icons disappeared instead of flying away). The fact is... it seems like 3.0 was designed with the iPhone 3GS in mind and then however the 3G runs it... that's the way it's going to be. When I had an iPhone 3GS... everything ran great. 3.0 on the iPhone 3GS is really nice.

When I got rid of my 3GS, the iPhone 3G seemed even more laggy and choppy... that is until I downgraded back to 2.2.1. Tell you what... the difference is amazing. My iPhone 3G now runs and performs almost as well as the 3GS did. The animations are really smooth and the launch times are fast enough.

The UI in 2.2.1 is more consistent too (which makes it look more pleasant). I think I heard that the Mac OS team originally designed the iPhone OS... and now they're back to working on OS X, so there's a new iPhone UI design team. In my opinion, they're not as good and the UI comes out looking sloppy/unfinished. That's how I feel.

Truth is: iPhone 3G belongs on 2.2.1 (after all, it was built for it) and iPhone 3GS belongs on 3.0.

Anyone wanna downgrade and share their experience?

He doesn't. He's just a troll that wants to waste your time in addition to his.

Stop calling me a troll. I provided pros and cons for both. I'm trying to figure out whether I want more features and improvements or a fast and responsive OS (in most areas).

I know I've tried 3.0/3.1 before but I was thinking about giving it another shot.

You know what "pushed" me to think about 3.0 again? I went to download an app I've already purchased (that I didn't have on my iPhone) and it was updated for push notifications so I couldn't install it. So now, I have to wait to get back to a computer to install it. Before you know it, other apps will be getting enhanced and updated and they might only run on 3.0.

maybe it's not an insignificant decision for him (and apparently it's not). Below the thread title the starters name is posted. You know what is really annoying? How people can see that someone like thespaz created a thread yet they still insist on clicking it, reading it, and then commenting negatively on something you already knew you weren't going to like in the first place.

I thought you only wanted to have one page of apps and of those apps, only one third party app. Had this thinking changed?
