Darn.

Oh well, I guess it's good that they're actually telling us instead of just not saying anything for a month until they finally release it. I can wait. :)

I'd rather they say that it's been delayed and not give a time frame.

If it's anything like the iTunes and App Store apps in iOS 6, it sucks. I'm sure this type of interface is okay on the iPad, but who can see the screenshots or fonts of on a iPhone?

I hope someone at Apple realizes now that removing links and data from a program doesn't mean the interface is getting cleaned up.

Don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but aside from general speed improvements, please please PLEASE multithread the app and make it use more than one core.

Plenty of video encoding apps use eight cores already, makes things vastly faster. If nothing else, when re-encoding audio, do one file on each core to speed up conversions of multiple files.

And make the app so that things like changing metadata allow the user to keep using the app instead of sitting there waiting for the spinning beach ball to go away. Seriously, the app feels like it was written fifteen years ago or something.

No I'm not talking about the rumored streaming services. I'm talking about streaming your already purchased content right from iTunes. I'm hoping the app itself should act like Netflix.

But first of all, your purchased content will always appear on your library screen as if it was downloaded, even though you might not have. This is a huge plus for me right off the bat because you don't have to go back and forth between your library and the store just to see what you've purchased. Have you tried redownloading your purchased content from the iTunes store? It's highly inconvenient. Just see how many clicks/taps and how much loading it takes to do it. The way iTunes 11 is set up, with iCloud built in, you see everything right in front of you without having to go into the store. I personally love this new feature.

And my big hope (and i'm not 100% sure about this), is that you might be able stream the content right there from your library screen. So let's say you purchase a movie, but choose not to download it. With iTunes 11, it will always show on your library screen, because you've purchased it. And hopefully just by clicking "play", you can immediately stream it. Anyway, the other huge factor here is a huge savings in disk space for people like me who buy tons of HD movies and TV shows, as well as music. I have an external 2TB drive that is already 100% full and I had to stop downloading the latest episodes of The Walking Dead because I ran out. Now about 95% of movies and all TV shows are on iCloud so you no longer have to keep these stored locally on your drives. It means I can finally free up tons of disk space now and just stream my purchased content. It's just an incredibly more streamlined way of driving the iTunes store and iCloud efficiently to the user.

That's very interesting. In the few instances where there's actually a TV show or a movie that I've purchased through iTunes, I could see that "self-streaming" feature to be a useful one. But I purchase very little video content from iTunes (or anywhere). 95% of my demand for streaming of this type is handled by Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Instant Video. I have a large library of items that I've ripped from my own (plastic) media, but I admit I haven't paid attention to the way iTunes through iCloud will handle this.

Will I have had to purchase the movies or TV shows through iTunes? Or will it work similarly to the way iTunes Match works for my music? That's been a nice feature. But still, Netflix and the other services meet my need for this. Though I can definitely see how someone who has made a substantial investment in shows and movies through iTunes would benefit.

Being one that was excited about this release, this is disappointing.

I laughed out loud the second I read the headline because of how big a joke it's became on the forums as to "When are they releasing iTunes 11?!" and then this happens.

Needless to say, it's not done til it's done right? :apple:

So which one is it Apple? Inconsistency bothers me.

After just having to replace my server (got the mini 2012) and my main rig, I could use a break for a bit..... :)

Apple does not know how to make software.

I'm not sure what you mean by this? General criticism of Apple's software, or something specific. Your criteria escape me.

Regardless, I completely disagree with you. In my opinion, Apple knows software development nearly as well as they know hardware; their software perfectly complements their hardware (where they really shine).

There isn't any offering in the consumer market where the two complement each other so well, and the main reason is that they control both. The software is designed and developed to make their beautiful hardware function wonderfully.

Reputation is everything. If you release a piece of crap early EVERYONE will NEVER FORGET that "x" is a piece of crap. The penalty for being late is much more forgiving. If you are late but "x" works pretty well nobody will remember "x" was late. They will only know they like it. So yes, please NO MORE HALF BAKED PRODUCTS!!!

Very true. Just look at Microsoft. It took them years to get past the fiasco that was Windows Vista.

It seems to me that there's been a bit of an identity crisis within Apple over the last year. On the one hand you had the branch led by Cook and Ive that emphasizes top quality customer experience and service. On the other, you had the faction led by Jobs and Forstall that seemed to be of the mindset "full speed ahead on new product and just paper over or deny any flaws that pop up after release." The second mindset was clearly dominant when Jobs was around, and that was ok, because Jobs was the kind of salesman who could convince you the sky was in fact green. I don't necessarily think this was the right path for the company to take, but it worked on the whole. But, with Jobs gone and Cook at the helm, customer service appears to be king once again at Apple. If you need any more evidence of that, just look at who got canned yesterday.

I think the approach that Cook is now pursuing is the right one. Apple has an incredible product portfolio, a huge lead in the tablet space, and a reputation for quality and customer service that has been built up over many years. Cook has rightly recognized that those advantages will disappear quickly if Apple continues to deliver products that are only 3/4th ready for market.

Funny how the hardware gets thinner, while the software gets more bloated.

Maybe they are trying to change this at the last minute....at least from the profile view. :p

After Maps Apple can't afford to screw another pooch. They need to beta test it to death. I hardly think anyone is on the edge of their pants for it so end of Nov, or Jan. Makes no difference as long as it works as intended and doesn't magically erases people's libraries or something.

Crap!

I know it's not such a big deal and that it's definitely better to finish it properly, but I was waiting for it so much. In the past few days I checked for software updates almost hourly.

From the keynote and screenshots @ http://www.apple.com/itunes/new-itunes/ I really think this will be the best update of iTunes ever.

As much as I want to play with the new iTunes, I think this is the right choice. Mac OS 10.8 was rushed with too many bugs, and my Retina MBP still doesn't work right after 3 complete reinstalls from scratch. I had to replace my iPhone 5 because the on/off button didn't work right.

Too many issues lately (for myself anyway), and as much as I've loved Apple in the past, I have at least considered getting out of the Apple/iOS ecosystem lately. I'm not sure if I really will, but Apple needs to step it up in the next year or two.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'd rather have a delay with little to no bugs, than a scheduled released with a bunch of bugs

Give me a break. This is right along the lines of the "Steve never would have..." rhetoric that simply doesn't fly. There were plenty of issues under dear leader and last I checked Tim was not a clone of Steve. Not only that, Steve is not here. I think Tim is addressing the issues as necessary.

I wonder if the recent (Oct. 17) purchase of Particle has anything to do with the pushback? If it's going HTML5 - the Lala team can finally show off what it's been doing. You know other than MusicMatch which was the reason I think Lala was bought in the first place. Maybe the Particle designers showed off a better design? Who knows, I just want Apple to get it right or don't ship it.

Edit: The Particle team has worked at Apple since September, news of the acquisition did not happen until this month.

If knowing it could be buggy why have such a early release time line? Obviously they were hoping it would be ready by October but it seams the iTunes team could have been busy with something else.

Whatever, better than being a buggy iTunes and I guess we will thanks Apple around Thanksgiving once it is ready for the public.

I'm glad they're not rushing it cos it would be a shame if they replaced the existing buggy P.O.S with yet another buggy P.O.S.... Again ;)
