Hi,

Does it mention anywhere regarding the resolution of "high-quality" mode 3D movies downloaded on Apple TV app?
Because we know it's only up to 1080p HDR on other devices when we downloaded contents.
And 4K HDR when we stream it.

So, I was wondering if should I download the 3D movies for faster loading, or should I stream it instead?

I've never downloaded a movie but I had no idea they killed the resolution when you did. yikes.

I prefer to stream for the higher resolution.
I had one of those "4k" movies downloaded on my iPad Pro. Because I wanted the option to watch it when I was out traveling.
Some months later I tried to watch it. The display was black, and the video refused to display when I played it.
I had to delete it and download it again. o_O So that killed my interest in downloading a movie to keep it for later

Just stream it. It won’t start any faster having it downloaded assuming you have reasonable internet.

I didn't have internet, as I was abroad for work for a week. And as I was kind of bored one evening. I decided I wanted to watch the movie i have purchased, and downloaded for such an occasion.
No luck though. Had no interest in listening to the movie, and presented with a black screen.

Thank you Apple. I try to avoid purchasing any movies on the Apple store since

That sounds like something that can be solved by restarting the device... or maybe not.. sorry to hear that happened to you. Don't give up just because of that one incident.

I’m not sure any streaming service can help if you have no internet. So it downloaded but didn’t play ?

It downloaded and played, as I watched it one time. But I could not watch it (Bladerunner the final cut) again after almost two months. It is a movie I think is worth watching more than one time. That's why I purchased it in the first place.

No-one else had a similar experience?

Yes that’s working as intended. When you download the movie it has a token authorising it for a certain length of time. 7 days maybe? Then if you open it after that it checks online to see if you’re still authorised to play. You don’t have to redownload it or anything. It’s just a quick verification. So if you open it months later with no internet it won’t play, no. Thats working as intended.

Netflix also works like this. So doe BBC player, Sky Go ect. All streaming services that let you download work this way.

Thank you for explaining this to me. I had no idea. I figured a purchased, not rented movie would be mine to use on the same device it was downloaded to
Hmm I think even downloads locally of films you’ve bought need to be authorised from time to time just to check they are not pirated. Otherwise you could download them and give them to a friend to watch. It needs to check the Apple ID that bought them is the one logged in.

I know that at least some of the movies are 1080p - primarily movies from the golden age of 3D (1952-54). I know that at least some of the recent 3D films are 4k. I've purchased a few and streamed others on Apple TV and Disney and they look great. Easily the best 3D viewing experience I've had.

Just stumbled across a hidden 3D gem on the AppleTv store. IMAX Under the Sea. It’s some of the best 3D I’ve experienced on the vision and has some really great coming out the screen effects. It’s from the early 2000s so resolution isn’t the best but still looks really good. Totally worth the $9.99.

Have you tried REAL IMAX 3D contents on IMAX native app?
If you have not, prepare to get your mind blown.

There's only 3 contents, but they all worth renting.
1.43:1 aspect ratio, with 4K HDR.
And if I understand correctly, you can watch "A Beautiful Planet 2D" for free by clicking the banner.

I was amazed!

My wishlist is that one day there will be some films with 1.43:1 for buying/renting.
Interstellar, The Dark Knight etc.

I’ve tried the free content but haven’t rented anything yet. I wish they would allow more content to buy especially movies like Dark Knight.

There are no 4k 3D movies.
I think it's just become a thing since AVP

And if you try some movies that listed as HD such as Final Destination 3D, Jackass 3D etc.
Compare with some movies with Dolby Vision + 3D, you'll clearly see the differences in sharpness.

Wow, not bad at all.

It's the device that makes the 3D sharper and etc...but there are no 3D movies made in 4k.
Pardon my little bit of word salad :D

Wow, much respect for the tech in AVP!!!!! Before I wanted one and being 3D fan, I want the AVP even more now.
Thanks for your post!!!!

What do you mean there are no 3D movies made in 4K? As far as I know, there are virtually no live action movies these days that are shot in 3D -- that is, shot with one camera capturing the left eye image and another camera capturing the right eye. James Camerson and possibly Peter Jackson will continue to shoot with a 3D camera rig, but other live action films are shot in 2D and converted into 3D in post-production. But are you suggesting that even those films don't capture images at 4K and maintain a 4k workstream through post-production? What about animated films that are rendered in 4K? Perhaps you are simply saying that there is no optical disk format the presents 3D movies in 4K. That's certainly correct - 3D is part of the Blu-Ray spec (with left/right in up to 1080p 24fps), but unfortunately was not included in the 4k UHD Blu-Ray spec

There's lots of stuff on this subject that I don't know but when a 3D movie is shot in 4K, I will cry with joy. A tv/disc player can can upscale it to a point.

What I found about 3D animated films in 4K. Of course, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the article but if you wish to read on and accept this mission etc...and cue in the TV series Mission Impossible music.
"At this time, 3D 4K movies are available only on the Apple Vision Pro headset".

I would assume the AVP is doing something a little bit different.

Yep, that also.

Just a little half-assed internet research turned up this factoid - IMAX produced a 3D camera that captured each eye in 4k resolution back in 2014, and this camera was used for Transformers: Age of Extinction. The Hobbit was shot using RED Epic cameras in 5K 3D, but I don't konw if that's a per eye spec. James Cameron developed the Fusion 3D camera for the Avatar films. But once again, the per eye resolution specs have provn elusive, at least to me.

Check out this video. Makes ya appreciate just how far Apple took it when it came to the viewing experience on Apple vision. And explains a lot why movies look better in 3d in it vs the movie theater

The Hobbit was shot using RED Epic cameras in 5K 3D
From https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1321352807

"Peter Jackson also reveals that The Hobbit is being shot in 3D. All scenes are created in full 3D-resolution and The Hobbit will be released in both 3D and 2D. The Red Epic cameras have no built-in 3D-mode, so instead the film crew has created a mirror-solution in collaboration with a company called 3ality".

this camera was used for Transformers: Age of Extinction.

James Cameron developed the Fusion 3D camera for the Avatar films
Avatars 3D were not shot in 4K

Whew, I'm amazed at the depth of knowledge some directors have in their craft when it comes to cameras!!!! and those IMAX cameras are fantastic.
A short extract from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX#Phantom_65_IMAX_3D_digital_camera

Phantom 65 IMAX 3D digital camera

In 2011, IMAX announced a 4K 3D digital camera. The camera was developed alongside Vision Research and AbelCine, integrating two Phantom 65 engines. A prototype camera was used for the documentary Born to be Wild, in which approximately 10% of the finished film was shot with the system.[28] The company has said they have no intention of replacing the higher resolution film cameras with the new digital camera, but the latter can be used in scenes that require a lightweight or relatively small 3D camera. While IMAX has completed the production camera and has placed it in service on several films, they have no plans to produce an IMAX film solely with the new digital system. Transformers: Age of Extinction is the first feature film partially filmed with the Phantom 65 IMAX 3D camera.[29]

I'm just a huge fan of 3D movies but I'm glad that you have helped me get more insight into 3D sausage making, lol. Yet, there are no 3D movies shot in 4k but 3D without the glasses may be here sooner than later!!!!

Why do you keep saying that there are no 3D movies shot in 4K when that statement is demonstrably false?
