I purchased Passengers a couple of days ago. When checking my account history it shows as being purchased in 4K, HDR.

weird .. maybe apple is preparing to release movies in 4k with the release of an updated apple tv

Will there be a new Apple TV device that is 4K or will they simply just update the current recent Apple TV with a software update to get 4K ?

The current ATV cannot do HDR - HDR10 needs HDMI2.0 and Dolby Vision requires dedicated chips (but could work over HDMI 1.4) - so it is unlikely 4K will ever come to ATV4.

So, Apple will upgrade these movies to 4K even though they were 1080p when you purchased them? That's really awesome if true.

Same here. This is from my purchase history. Recently rented Fantastic Beasts on my Apple TV. Not sure if it matters but my Apple TV is connected to a KS8000 4k/HDR TV.

anyone seeing 4k HDR on a BETA macOS?

some see HD some see 4K
some in UK, some in US.

That would be dope- hopefully we get to see more and more movies listed on 4K

So is the actual file in 4K? Open it on your computer and see if the resolution is greater than 1920X1080.

Last I knew, the files you download from Desktop iTunes were different from those served up on the ATV 4 gen store. (Lack of DD+ audio is a telltale sign of this)

I don't know absolutley- it's been a while since I purchased an iTunes file. It would be news to me if it's actually a different file. I think the Dolby Digital is in there with non-surround audio for computers. The last one I did download has both tracks wrapped in FairPlay... but the DD track is in there too.
