*OK, and sidenote "Apple do it with a lot of things" example - it's just "DVD Studio Pro", there's no "DVD Studio" and "DVD Studio Pro" - just the ONE app.

1. iTunes Pro: I don't like the idea of a pay for Pro version of iTunes.

2. DVD Studio Pro does have options for a Basic and Advanced arrangement. I wish that they had done this with FC too.

I can imagine quite a few improvements to iTunes. Number one on my list would be a better implementation of what I currently pay for with Nettunes: a less laggy way to control the library of any computer on my network.

One thing I'd like to see with iTunes was something that another person came up with - ripping tracks onto your mac at Apple Lossless - but placing the music compressed onto an iPod. Id love to hear my music at my desk at the highest quality available - but dont really need that when cycling or jogging with me iPod Photo.

i hear thats what iTunes does for the Shuffle.

This is what I would really like to see. The shuffle does it but will only compress to 128 AAC. We need this for all iPods, and we need the ability to select the new bitrate. I would love to go from lossless to 256.

A more efficient codec would be nice too. I would like to see more efficient lossless.... but I'm sure that would be much more of a challenge. I can dream can't I?

There is only one feature I want...

Multiple computer library syncing. I have two computers (one PC, one mac) and it's a royal pain to get songs from one to the other.

Select "sync library", choose the appropriate computer from the LAN, let iTunes compare the libraries and copy songs to and fro until the libraries match.

The only reason this is a big deal is that I buy my songs on the mac, but my PC has much better speakers (klipsch THX 2.1, excellent sound btw).

But that's different interface SET-UPs, not a cut-down version and a full version. And I agree, Final Cut Express can be pretty intimidating once you first switch from iMovie, where as my limited time with DVDSP in Basic felt familiar and simple enough coming from iDVD.

But according to ThinkSecret iTunes 4.8 is in the future, with no 5 foreseen yet.

Yeah, I'm sure we're all looking forward to have another one of nag-screens "Hey, why not switch to iTunes Pro" whenever we start up iTunes. I honestly can't think of anything that's missing in iTunes right now.. so I don't even know what an iTunes 5 would be like, but I reeeaaaalllllyyy don't know what a Pro version could be (better encoding at the cost of the free iTunes' encoding?)

How about a way to manage your own store front on iTunes to sell your own home made music? That would be a nice Pro feature. It probably would require subscription fees and you would need to give Apple some of your profits per song. It probably will never happen. This would make Apple a music label.

I can think of something that's missing in iTunes: Automation!
Why should I have to go install tons of scripts just to "put this after that" or "this in that"? (these scripts can really come in usefull!)
I would like changing playlists, where if you drag a song into it it will edit various properties of the track, such as making it part of a compilation, re-setting the play count, changing the Album/Artist/Genre etc.

Hey, that's such a cool idea, and maybe a glipse to the future! Maybe in the future artists will actually have a say in what music to distribute?!
BornAgainMac, no joke, I really find your idea interesting and futuristic. If Apple could somehow become a music label (Could they not call it iTM - hmm) and find a simple way of distributing music and artist this way, we would hear a lot more varied and interesting music, and it would empower people a lot.

Procedure:
Artist uploads 5 full length tracks to Apple, who listen, then post (to stop people filling up the store with crap).
Get enough hits/downloans of your music, and you are given rights to ditribute over iTMS for periods of 6 months. Apple take a % of profits related to time and volume.

I have to say; what a concept! Maybe not in the nest 5 years, but maybe not as many as 10...

for both iTunes and the iPod: gapless playback. this is not simply a nice feature, it's a necessity!

How about:

- Better radio streams with more info about the stations.
- Folders within the main library
- Some kind of Podcast client/RSS

Two words: vbr aac. The pc has had it for over a year (Nero). Apple is the most public face of aac, but how can it lead the evolution out of mp3 if they haven't even implemented vbr encoding???

When I heard that iTunes introduced that funtionality for the Shuffle, I got excited that maybe that would work with the other iPods as well. No such luck... I would love this feature implemented this way:

- Been able to choose on what format/bitrate you want your music downloaded to your iPod
- Modify the Burn MP3 CD option, so that you can burn a CD with only 128/192Kbps MP3 music. AND, keep the folder structure on the CD (different/related issue).

I would love to encode all the CDs I rip at 128/160 AAC, but I have a 10 CD Changer in the car that only plays MP3s, so I have to rip everything to MP3s...
