Ever since I updated to the latest 64-bit version of iTunes (10.6.0.40) on Windows 7, for some reason, it won't let me download anything at all, such as podcasts for example.

I know that it's definitely not my internet connection at all that's causing the problem as it's working fine although it goes down every so often.

I've never had this sort of problem previously and I'm puzzled as to why it's not working any more.

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can fix it, I'd be very grateful.

Same thing happened to me. What itunes support says is to open port 80 and 443, however, that may result to (what some would say) major security
compromises.

I suggest looking more into specific port/domain openings for apple and itunes
