The downloaded album art seems to all be plain old JPEG wrapped in some proprietary junk. GraphicConverter, for one, can extract the images easily.

The stuff going into the new local folder seems to be mostly PNG, also with gunk on top. I haven't got around to seeing what off-the-shelf software, if any, can extract it. A search for a PNG header may be reliable enough without deciphering the iTunes preamble.

(edit: Ooo, but it's still in the applescript dictionary, so this may not be so bad at all.)

missing covers

is some geezer gonna do some auto instal thingy for all those missing album covers?

cmon wizzos

What ?

Geezer ?

wizzos ?

are you asking if we think the elderly will download album artwork for their iTunes collections? Somehow I doubt it.[/QUOTE]

Translation: Is some techo geek dude gonna invent an app to auto load missing albums for us dudes with only the song name - I'm getting generic album covers for some of my songs, even if the album name is missing. (ok sunshine?)

ps - and don't forget, we invented your bleedin language - duuuude ;-)

So are you thinking that the 'local' is indeed a dupe of the embedded art, used for coverflow, while the 'downloads' is anything new that comes from iTunes and isn't embedded?

Yeah, they appear to be the same file format, with the folder location only indicating if the art came from Apple or not. The headers really look the same, and the JPEG vs. PNG thing may simply have been a coincidence in the files I looked at.

I'm thinking that the scripting interface may be the best way (for now) to get at the purdy picshurs, Apple may get bored and change the formats or tree again in 7.1.

Has iTunes 7 's new cover flow view increased your obsessive compulsiveness with your iTunes library?

It has for me, now I can't stand seeing an album without cover art, or not properly tagged.

I was fairly obsessive before, but still had some odds and ends that were not perfect. As a result, I've been trashing anything that isn't a complete album, or doesn't have cover art after searching..

Anyone else experiencing an increase in iTunes OCD?

:)
Most definitely! I used Corripio to update all my missing album art prior to iTunes 7. Now, I'm glad I did. I love the new Group Cover List look.

The benefit of not embedding the artwork within the files is that for an album with 20 tracks, you don't need 20 copies of the artwork. Each file just has a reference in it that points to the CDDB ID of the album, which is also how the artwork is organized within the Artwork folder.

If you have loads of songs, having one copy of each album's artwork can save many many megabytes of space. Of course, there are the negative effects that have been stated already. I prefer to have it this way.

If you really want to embed the artwork though, consider checking out AtomicParsley which is a command line program capable of tagging all MPEG-4 files (mp4, m4p, m4v, m4a, m4b). It also has artwork embedding capabilities. Check it out.

My OCD really burned me on this one- I specifically deleted ALL of my album art because I wanted a fresh start with all pristine iTunes versions...I added them, and now my album art screensaver literally shows 0 albums.
I did that too. :(

I am upset.

LOL

Ok.

and ya that would be a convenient app....homie. :D

Well I've given that Corripio a bash and it's fairly good - tho it doesn't have a cover for Tattooed Beat Messiah :(
