Here's the scenario: I've been using a Mac mini 1,1 (iTunes 11.4 on Snow Leopard) as a media server for months now. It streams to my Apple TV. Yesterday, it worked fine.
Today -- with no changes, tweaks, or anything at all from me -- it suddenly doesn't.
When I try to play any video at all in iTunes from the server, I get a black screen and no audio. The scrubber moves and the timer advances as if SOMETHING is playing, but...there's nothing.
Thought it was specific to the file, so tried a bunch at random. Same deal. Purchased content, ripped DVDs, home movies, all the same: black screen, no audio.
So, I thought it was AirPlay. Went straight to the server and played the files in iTunes itself. Same deal.
So, I quit and restarted. Rebooted. Same and same.
Checked that the computer was authorized (though that shouldn't make a difference for the ripped content). It was and is.
I tried opening the files with QuickTime Player 7 AND X. Aha! In both cases, the files worked. Also tried QuickLooking them: No dice there, either.
Repaired disk permissions because...why not? No luck.
I moved a couple of the files off the server and onto my iMac, which played them just fine. (It's running Yosemite.)
Seriously, I did NOTHING to the server in the twelve or so hours between when it worked and when it stopped. Does anyone have any thoughts/advice/suggestions?
