I'm selling my iPhone, and would like to keep it on the same firmware (4.0). It's a 3GS.

When I Option+click Restore in iTunes, and find the ipsw file (Downloaded from iClarified) for the 4.0 3GS one, It says:

"This iPhone ___ could not be restored. This device is not eligible for the requested build"

What could be the problem? I'm jailbroken using jailbreakme, and I'm unlocked using UltraSnow, but other than actually jailbreaking and unlocking, I haven't done anything else.

EDIT: The ipsw I downloaded is 8A923, and so is my iPhone. My baseband is 05.13.04, and I'd like to keep it at that if possible, for unlocking purposes.

You could go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. It'll delete your content and keep your jailbreak but know that if someone was really savvy they could get the content back (I'm not sure how, I've just heard it's possible).

Otherwise, there is no way to keep the unlock currently.

[UPDATE] Bad advice! Erase All Content and Settings will restore the iPhone.

Heh. No problem. Lets just hope I can get it jailbroken/unlocked in the next 15 minutes. The guy is coming to pick it up :p.

An Erase All Content and Settings takes hours to complete!

Eh. this one finished quickly. Didn't have much stuff on it.

But alas, it is still prompting me to upgrade. I get the same error in OP.

WHAT TO DO NOW? :(

----------

All the guy needs to do is have it be unlocked. Doesn't matter what firmware/baseband, as long as it's unlockable.

So what ipsw can I upgrade it to while ensuring it can be jailbroken and unlocked?

How do I preserve the baseband? I'm downloading/installing pwngetool now, and I have the ipsw.

How do I go about updating it?
I'm looking into it now. It's been a while since I was preserving mine.

[UPDATE] It seems that it preserves it automatically. Doesn't seem to be a setting to tick but I'd poke around in them just to make sure.

So, I go and browse for the 4.1 ipsw, but ti says Wrong Firmware Bundle selected in pwngetool. Any ideas?

And how would I go about unlocking it?
I have no problem putting 4.3.5 on it, I just need to be able to unlock it
That's the issue. You CAN'T unlock it. You can preserve the baseband but there is NO current unlock for 4.3.5. Preserving the baseband could allow him to unlock it in the future.

You've got no other option though since you can't install anything but 4.3.5.

6.15.00 is a mess because your hacking it onto the phone. I'm not even sure you can still do that and have it work on 4.3.5. I was looking into it but never found a good solution. I'll keep looking.

Thanks. The guy just came, saw that there was no OS on it, and asked me to put some OS on it so he can see that it's unlockable/unlocked, and he'll come back later today.

So I gained some time. But not much

EDIT: And apparently Apple's still signing 4.1? I'm able to restore using iTunes to 4.1 and 5.14.02 which has an unlock....right?

That's better than nothing.

According to the IPSW Downloader app (excellent) you can:

... they are!? (how'd I miss that?) Well, that would be the route to go for sure. HELL, try it!

[UPDATE] IPSW says it's unlockable with 6.15.00. Not sure that's much better ... or accurate.

Huh. I just restored it to 4.1.

Awesome. Now, time to unlock.

----------

Also, pwngetool doesn't jailbreak it...for some reason.

It keeps saying Wrong Firmware Bundle when I choose the 4.1 ipsw. And yes, it's for the 3GS.

How would I even go about jailbreaking it now..

Working on it. It's building the ipsw. <--- This process takes forever!

Back when I actually was involved in jailbreaking/unlocking, I remember all you really had to do was connect to pwngetool and hit jailbreak, and check the unlock box and then it guided you threw the DFU process. And then done.

Now it's so much more complex.
