Need to backup my iPhone 128gb before upgrading to new phone but don't have enough space on internal hd to perform the backup.

I know I can mess in terminal and create a link to another drive/folder but why isn't this built into iTunes?

With phone storage getting bigger surely I can't be the only one that has run into this?

Simple backup to iCloud, solves all the hassle.
Until cloud backup is either unstable/insanely slow or simply not possible for whatever reason.
[doublepost=1529670930][/doublepost]Given how Apple pushes towards removing all ports on a phone, I cannot see Apple improving iTunes in any manner anytime soon. This issue will likely be ignored as long as terminal solution exists.

BTW, I hate to move my backup to an external hard drive either. But I have no choice.

I have understood your problem. iCloud is already stable and all bugs fixed. You can use it for backup. iTunes has improved a lot in the new ios 12 but they are not updating for lower ios versions. Microsoft Tech Support UK have told that you can use dr.fone software for backup.

Maybe find a friend who has space on their hard drive. No way I would trust the cloud when changing phones. I use the cloud daily but make an encrypted iTunes backup weekly.

Most the time the cloud is fine but I have seen it go very wrong. An iTunes back up will be complete in 5 minutes and you are covered a bit more against data loss.
