So for some effin reason last night iTunes decided to change the default media folder location so my entire library collection (music, movies, tv shows, etc) is completely empty. Fortunately I still have all the files on the external hard drive for my PC but I have had zero luck so far getting iTunes to restore my collection.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated because this is equal parts infuriating and terrifying.

I tried that but it didn't transfer over the ratings, plays, etc. Nor did it bring over the fixes I had made to songs with incorrect album names, numbers in the track names, spelling, track numbers, etc.

Is this my only option? Do I really have to go back and edit all these songs all over again? Create all my playlists again?

EDIT:

Would I be better off getting my MacBook out and transferring all the files back to my collection via wireless?

It sounds to me like iTunes could not find your library and created a new one.

Look carefully in the old location and see if there is an itunes library there.

This may be as simple as opening the old library file.
