itunes crashing/lagging

there is currently a ton of songs on my external hard drive that lag/crash itunes. when i try to copy them to my mac hdd i get an error that says operation cannot complete b/c some data cannot be read/written.

a) this likely means my external hdd is damaged and about to fail completely, correct?

b)is there any possibly way of recovering everything on this drive?
