So, I highlighted about 23 songs from an album, and clicked on create apple lossless version. I now have two copies of each song. Shouldn't it have asked me if I wanted to delete the original version? I guess I need to delete each one individually?

Sort by date added (if you can't see that column, right click on the column headers and click on 'Date Added').

If the songs are already in your library, iTunes will not delete them when making a new copy. If they were already in your library (which I have to assume since you ended up with 2 copies), I would ask the question: what format were they in? Unless they were uncompressed (AIFF, WAV, etc.), making Lossless versions will only make them bigger, not better.
