What version of Mac OS X do you have on your computer? You need at least 10.6.8. If your computer is equivalent to that or better, you need to make sure itunes is updated, so open the Mac App Store and check for updates.

Oh, I forgot about windows :p

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer because everything is updated BUT I do have some suggestions. Have you tried using another computer or another USB cable? It is possible for either one of those to be a problem.

BTW, does your iPad start charging or say "not charging"?

Wait...so you aren't using an official apple USB cable? Or do you mean something else by adaptor? If you don't use official cables there will be issues like iTunes not seeing your device :p

After I updated to iTunes 11.1.4, iTunes would no longer detect my iPhone. I found the solution on the Apple discussions site; I can't find it now, but I'll reproduce the general steps. I don't know if it'll solve your issue, but it did mine.

Go to Device Manager in the Start panel.
Go to Portable Devices. Right click on Apple iPhone (or Apple iPad in your case) and select Update Driver Software. Choose Browse my computer for driver software. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.

I'm on a PC with Windows 8.

I have a similar problem.... on a Mac, everything is up to date. itunes doesn't want to load my iPad Air.

it seems it does nothing, but if a wait 2-3 minutes, I get a message from iTunes saying that iTunes can't connect to my iPad because the session of the unit expired.

Search here, on Google and on Apple forums with no luck. Open thread here and on Apple forums... no answer.

But I do have a Genius appointment for later today... we will see what he will say.
