Hi,

My iPhone XS Max attempted to upgrade to 12.1.4 overnight and I woke up to the dreaded restore screen. Since then, I've been trying to restore but always get Error 7 at the middle of the operation.

I took it in the Apple Store and they didn't know what error 7 was and offered to replace it. Problem is I bought it from HK for the dual sim and of course they'd replace it with an ESIM one which I'm not interested in.

Does anybody have any idea how to restore this thing? Anyone encounter error 7 before on iTunes? I couldn't find anything online.

Cheers.

iTunes on PC or Mac? Have you tried to use it on a different computer? When you were at Apple Store, did they attempt to restore your device?

I attempted from 3 different Macs and different cables at home.

Yes they did try to restore multiple timesit at the Genius Bar but it's error 7 every time and they had no idea what that was. I asked to escalate to engineering as I won't replace it with an esim but not keeping my hopes up. Now I'm still with a bricked phone.

If you attempted from different iTunes on Mac and PC, it may be possible wrong firmware was downloaded or issue on the device. We can try this.

Download the latest iTunes - https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Download the full IPSW signed firmware - https://ipsw.me/

Get the IPSW firmware for your device XS Max (China). Using iTunes with the device connected, PC (Shift + Check for Update/Restore) or Mac (Option and Check for Update/Restore) and select that IPSW. Use Check for Update if you are trying to retain your data or restore if you want to wipe the device. If update fails, you will need to restore. Hopefully, you have iCloud backup enabled.

I tired the above albeit on a mac only with both 12.1.3 and 12.1.4. Error 7 shows up.
