I have a Verizon iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.10 on a tethered jailbreak. I'm trying to take my iPhone to Apple because my home button is not working and a red spot on the screen (guess a pixel is out), but i need to undo my jailbreak first. I tried updating and restoring to iOS 5.0.1, but i keep getting an error message, "This device isn't eligible for the requested build." I read forums it could be my host file, but i've tried following the posts. I also deleted TinyUmbrella thinking that could be the cause, but had no success. This is the last two lines of my "host" file:

# 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
# 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

I don't know what else to do.. Does anyone have any idea as to what I can try next?

Did you remove those two lines in the host file? If not, then do so.

I did remove the lines, but I still get the same message. This is the current text on my hosts file:

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost

did you reboot?

Judging by the error message you might have a bad (or the wrong) copy of the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW saved.

Close iTunes, open up %AppData%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates and delete everything, then try again through iTunes.

Oh and yeah if you didn't reboot after changing the hosts file do that first.

I rebooted after changing host file and still got the error message. I also cleared the copy of iOS 5.0.1 IPSW from iPhone Software Updates and restarted the update process, but that didn't work. I then downloaded a copy of the IPSW online and held down "option" while clicking restore and that didn't work either.

To be clear, you allowed iTunes to download iOS 5.0.1 for you?

Settings - General - Erase all content & settings

This should force your phone into Recovery mode, and then you can install the latest iOS from there.

I let iTunes download iOS 5.0.1, but that didn't work.. I also downloaded iOS 5.0.1 doing a search online and held down "option" while clicking restore and that didn't work

If it doesn't work will my phone be stuck in recovery mode?
