Lets remember this was an iTunes exclusive track, you couldn't buy it elsewhere, and it was promoted by TV. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Wonder how many new iTunes accounts were created for new users. Very good for Apple, very good ad for iTunes.

and it's hard to believe how many CDs are still sold!

CD's are here to stay for a loooong time. I extremely doubt hard copies in some format will cease to be sold ever. And I don't see anything challenging the CD. Especially not anything smaller in size.

Hot 100 isn't really a sales chart, it's a mix that more reflects radio because single sales in the US have shrunk so much over the years. For the last 9 or 10 years it hasn't even been necessary for a track to be available as a single to appear on that chart.
