so i transferred my itunes folder over to the external and it works great...until i disconnect the external. then itunes re-creates an itunes folder in the music folder and automatically changes the location that itunes looks for music to that original music folder, therefore when i reconnect the external i have to go back into advanced prefs and tell itunes to look on the external again, and i have to do that everytime...is there any way to change that??

Hmmm...that should work fine. This is something that looks like it should be very easy to do, but a lot of people seem to have problems with it. I'm not sure where the difficulty happens, as I don't use an external for my music. Have a look through this thread...the folks there discuss a lot of different ways they've done and the relevant successes and failures they've had. Different things seem to work for different people (which is odd, but whatever), so maybe one of them will work for you. Using an alias on your local machine to point to the external is a popular method I've seen to help with some external drive issues.

Sorry I can't be of more help...this is definitely one of the more perplexing difficulties with iTunes. It comes up on here a lot and I've never seen a failsafe method of addressing it.

I have all my music on an external and have unplugged/plugged in several times with no problems. I have the "keep itunes organized" checked but the "copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library" unchecked. I dont know if this will help you or not though.

if you dony have your files copied the itunes library, do they still automatically save to the external where the rest of the songs are at?

I think the problem is when you start iTunes and do not have your external device/share connected. iTunes will revert to the original music folder and save anything there (such as podcasts, etc). I run into this problem as well, as I keep all my music on my NAS. I just make sure, every once in a while, that my iTunes music folder is pointing to the correct location.
