If you use iTunes' "Get Album Artwork" feature on music tracks loaded into the iTunes library that were not purchased in iTunes, upon exporting said music tracks (drag the track into a Finder folder) the album artwork is missing from the exported file. This can be corrected by manually going into iTunes, dragging the downloaded artwork to the desktop, re-adding it, saving the changes to the track, and exporting the track again.

I reported the bug to Apple but they said that its functioning as intended. How could that be functioning as intended?

You can try it now and see that it doesn't work right.
