Hello I'm new here and names Danny.

I have this old computer (windows XP) and I have iTunes and I realized that iTunes makes my computer really laggy and messes up thing. when i deleted iTunes my computer runs so much smoother but I had to reinstall because well I add new songs and videos to it alot.

So my question to all of you is: can I RUN AND INSTALL iTunes onto a Flash Drive (I have a brand new 8GB one). I want to be able to have no itunes at all on my computer and if I do need to use iTunes I just want to be able to plug in the flash drive and boom open itunes up right from there. Is that possible? Or is there even a way to do this and maybe have alot less iTunes memory on the computer?
Please help!
Thanks!
Danny

I was mistaken those 6 (almost 7) years ago when I made my response. iTunes could have run fine with it being installed on an external hard drive. Of course, back then, we were limited to USB 2.0 (at least for non-Mac supporters) which meant that iTunes would have taken forever to boot up for a few reasons. First, iTunes would load at USB 2.0 speeds which are actually around 350Mbps (the 450Mbps is just theoretical peak performance while most devices operate at much slower speeds). Secondly, while iTunes would be loading on a system, it would also be reading an iTunes library and its media that is stored on the same hard drive.

Either way, running iTunes on an external USB 2.0 hard drive isn't recommended as the whole thing will perform rather poorly. It shouldn't be bad on a USB 3.0 or eSATA external hard drive since those operate just like secondary internal hard drives (though they tend to be around 5400RPM). I definitely wouldn't install iTunes on a USB 2.0 thumb drive and expect it to be a smooth experience. The best thing anyone can do is move their iTunes library (not the program itself) to an external hard drive and then just install iTunes on the primary internal hard drive. That way iTunes will perform normally and all of the media will not be stored on the primary HDD filling it up. iTunes itself is only a ~350MB program. You have bigger problems if you can't spare 350MB on your internal hard drive especially since Windows does best when it has about 15GB of breathing room.
