iPod iTunes - How Do I Refresh Music List

Typically I rip my CDs on my desktop computer. What I then do is to copy new songs to a usb stick and transfer them to the directory that houses my music collection on my MBP.

How can I get iTunes to update the list automatically so that the new MP3s will be synced with my iPod?
