well i just imported and it only copied the ones that weren't already there. so it worked! just in case anyone else is ever in a similar situation, maybe this thread will help them:cool:
 
Maybe it is too late for you, but if iTunes preferences is set to "copy songs when adding to library" when I drag and drop songs (or folders full of songs) onto my Music Library, iTunes only copies the ones that don't exist already. They don't have to be in the Music folder at all. However, I've never tried to do that from an external drive, but I don't expect it to behave differently. You just have to make sure the folder you drag is not a hidden folder (the ones with a dot in front of them). No need to mess with Terminal.
