It's to stop you device hopping to download stuff on others devices. SimpleI do not understand the point of that lock. I have heard previously it is something to do with copyright, but that does not make sense. Anyone know?

That's your issue. Regional restrictions are not set by Apple but the content provider.Well, I have my iPhone set to my Canadian (main) account, and my iPad set to my UK account. If, what I want to watch is not on my phone, I download and watch it on my iPad.
