So I got iTunes match working great on all my devices. (macbook pro, pc, iPhone, and iPad) MY questions is on my original device, my macbook pro, which as all the original music. Is upgrading my music if its below 256kbps going to cause me any problems down the road. I know in the past iTunes music was only playable on apple devices. Is the music I am redownloading now iTunes plus music that I can play on any device.

The reason I am asking is before I upgrade my entire 10000+ song collection I don't want to be screwed if I ever leave apple products god forbid.

It'll convert it to 256 AAC. However, if you switch from an iPod for instance, to an mp3 player that will only play mp3's, as far as I know, you'll have to re-convert those songs back to mp3 instead of AAC

okay but I can always convert them to something else if needed. I know old iTunes songs the only way to take of the encoding was burn to a cd then rerip back to computer

You can convert them right in iTunes to mp3s.

It'll be a pain in the butt to convert all the new 256 Kb AACs back to MP3 so I can use them on my Sansa Clip that I use at the gym. So...time to invest in a $49 iPod Shuffle . :)
