I have a huge itunes library. Much of that is live recordings which are not commercially available. I think that my purchased/ripped tracks would be well under 25,000. I'd like to be able to upgrade those tracks which were ripped at lower bitrate back when memory was expensive.
If I were to create a "temporary" library which contained only the tracks I wanted to upgrade (<25,000), would I then be able to download the better bitrates and then replace the originals in my "real" library? Even if I cancel the annual subscription?
The cloud storage doesn't really interest me that much. I would just see this as a way to upgrade my library without reripping hundreds of CDs.

What would happen to the downloaded files?

Doesn't iTunes match just allow you to stream the songs rather than download them?

My goal is to upgrade my lower bitrate files. Streaming is secondary to me. I'm not interested in a yearly subscription to stream my own music. I can set up my own system for that.

As long as the song matches it will work. Just delete the song from your Mac but be sure to select "do not delete from iCloud". Then, download it from iTunes match and it will be the apple store version.
