Hey - posted this thread in another forum and it was suggested I might get some good answers here.

I upgraded the hard drive in my Mini running El Capitan and I backed up and saved my iTunes - when I restored the iTunes on the new drive I am missing some playlists and some music is not showing up. But when I go into the iTunes folder -> iTunes Media folder -> Music folder - I see all the music. Why is it not showing up? And where did the missing playlists go?

Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

What files/folders did you back up?
Playlists and media catalogue is kept in the library file (normally ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl )
Media itself is kept in media folder (normally ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/ ) - if you allowed iTunes to organise your media and copy to media folders.
These need to be restored and all will be well as if before drive upgrade.
You say your media folder is intact, but library catalogue is not. Hence check whether your iTunes Library.itl is the same as on your old disk.
With a simple external enclosure/adapter you should be able to copy them from your old disk as well.

If nothing else helps, just drag and drop the itunes media folder onto the app icon in the dock and it will re-scan and re-build the library.
Unfortunately, this will not reincarnate your playlists/ratings/play counts, if your original iTunes Library.itl is missing or damaged.
