By the limited number of posts on this thread I can only assume there is little interest in Apple movie downloads.

Nice update but...

I have bought two iTunes movies and only watched one. Quality was okay for a film that was made in 1970's. The other movie, "Brothers Grimm" from 2005, I haven't watched yet.

Of the HD movies I rented so for, the video and sound quality was clearly better than most of my Bright House cable HD content. That is what I was hoping for. More HD movies available for rent. :apple:TV isn't going to break from the pack without more and timely HD movies.

With that said, I check out the update on my :apple:TV. Clearly there are MORE movies to buy. But I have a PS3, so if I'm going to buy a movie, it is going to be on Blu-Ray disc! But the vast majority of movies out there I want to watch I don't want to own. I'm not going to swear off Blockbuster, but I want to rent more HD movies from iTunes. This announcement doesn't really help me.

@Frisco: Post counts are meaningless.

Makes no sense to me, it just sounds like you're too cheap to pay to watch movies.
As far as I see it, the movie industry has to threat the pirates as normal competitors, because as far as consumers are concerned, they are.

So far the pirates are winning. Since the 'legitimate' distributors seem to insist on getting paid for their content they have to offer more value than the torrent sites do for free.

Right now, I can comfortably browse through a catalog of movies on my favorite torrent site, click on the one I want to see, wait half an hour for it to download and then I can just put it on a USB key and watch it on my TV. Very convenient (and also very legal by the way, at least where I live).

So what does the industry offer as an alternative ? I have to pay for the movie, there is no surround sound, It's crippled by DRM, I can't watch it on my TV. So they offer LESS value for MORE.

That's no way to run a business.

Seems to me the movie industry needs to get their act together if they ever want to compete with the pirates.

You can watch your Apple TV with S-Video, but it requires you to buy an additional device.

You need to put it to 480i, but it works like a charm. I used this for a couple of months, but now I got myself an HDTV.
Way too expensive for something that could have been included in the device for a few cents extra manufacturing costs (most graphics chips already support this it's just a question of hooking it up to a connector). Just shows that Apple doesn't really care about Europe. Furthermore, europe doesn't use NTSC but PAL, so that would be 576i, is that option available at all ?

Yea, this will never happen. They don't release DVDs or Blu-Ray before or at the same time as theatrical release. There's no way that the movie industry is going to allow it to be on iTunes. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the movie industry makes a lot of money on theatrical releases. Plus, I know a lot of people, including myself that enjoys going to theaters.
You can still go to the cinema if the DVD is released on the same day. Why not give consumers a CHOICE ?

Where you live? Pic quality and audio sucks in a film theatre? this is a joke, right? I agree with the annoying people remark though.
I live in the netherlands. I find the picture quality in cinemas quite unacceptable. If you blow up a 35mm film to a big ass screen, it's going to look horrible and blurry. It's not that I'm expecting a 160dpi screen, but something similar to normal PAL resolution (i'm not talking about the absolute number of lines but about the number of lines per centimeter). would have been nice. Usually, I'm able to see the grain of the film which is really distracting.

And the audio quality is lower than that of a DVD (at least for Dolby Digital, lower bitrate) and the speaker systems in theaters can't compete with a HiFi audio/surround set. Especially since >90% of the seats aren't in the 'sweet spot'.
