ITunes not playing uploaded songs, but matched songs ok.

Hello
This problem has followed me across iTunes releases AND a change of computer. So needless to say I have re- installed, cleared the cache, signed in and out of iTunes Store etc.
iTunes won't play uploade songs but has no trouble playing matched songs. The uploaded songs will play on my iPhone iPad and Apple TV fine. If I download the song I get a file that won't play in iTunes or anywhere else. I'm on the latest version of iTunes..
