When I sync my iphone or ipad via itunes on mac following a change to any playlist, instead of just updating the playlist on the device, it creates another playlist (playlist1) on the device and in itunes. this has been going on for ages not a high sierra issue. any ideas? it's really annoying .. i have to delete the duplicate playlist every time I sync

Same here its very annoying. Did you ever find a fix?

I contacted apple support via twitter. They got me to delete the playlist and create a new one. That did work for about 2 days and then the same thing. I've given up now.

update: I just started apple music trial .. it's bloody amazing and also it syncs playlist changes via icloud now so no need to sync with imac.

I and the duplicate playlist issue 1300+. Apple said delete one at a time. Took two week of a paper clip on the delete button. After awhile it would beach all. Start again, on and on.

I no linger use the iTunes I moved on to amazon music

Almost all of the itunes issues can be solved by subscribing to Apple Music.... Odd isnt it?

it's been reported in the official discussions, it's where I first found people talking about it. (see the link above) Apple just ignores it, cause if you subscribe (pay...) to Apple Music, the issue goes away.

The official apple (discussion) message board is not more efficient than reporting the issues via the feedback form I posted above.
This has been proved a million times in the past, and if you've been a member there for a long time you surely know it. Apple does not monitor those forums as much as we'd like to think. It gives priority to the issues that are sent via the feedback form. Oh, and an article mentioning the issue here in Macrumors' front page would really help, but I doubt anyone from the MR staff would consider this seriously.

Maybe if you READ the discussions I linked................. you would SEE others HAVE used the feedback form............... and have been ignored.......... it's been going on for years, Apple "fixes" the issue by selling you apple music subscriptions.

How exactly have you contributed to this discussion? By preventing people from reporting the issue to Apple, and promoting the conspiracy theory that Apple does not care to fix this because they want to sell Apple Music subscriptions? As I said above, if a lot of people report this, especially the ones that do not want to buy an Apple Music subscription, we may have a hope that it will be looked into. Doing nothing, and accepting the fact that so far Apple has ignored us, is not helping anyone or anything for that matter.

By pointing out that everything that you say HAS been done... and Apple continues to ignore the issue.
Unless you subscribe to Apple Music, which DOES cure the issue.

Your contribution is telling people to do something that has been proven to not work in this case.
Again, read the multiple threads on apple discussions and here. Using the apple feedback BS has been done, does nothing to help the issue. Some artist pictures are missing in itunes for over a year, Apple Music sub fixes that issue... and yes, feedback has been sent.
The issue has been going on for YEARS as I pointed out.... so in your mind NOBODY has ever thought to contact Apple? Apple has ignored the issue, so people branch out to find other forms of help. And unless you bow down and pay a sub to Apple, your playlists and artist pictures of music YOU OWN and has nothing to do with Apple Music... gets screwed up.

I just come here from time to time when I have an issue because MR tends to have a lot better results.

As I said above, if a lot of people report this, especially the ones that do not want to buy an Apple Music subscription
Been done.

Proves my point.

Again, It's been reported for years. Apple Music was created mid 2015, note the date these issues started popping up.... right afterwards. Note that if you Sub, you do not have these issues...

First of all stop misinterpreting and twisting the words I say.

a) My contribution is telling (MORE) people to do "something". Your posts are telling people to accept that nothing will ever be done. Never ! This alone is enough.
b) If a lot of people use the feedback forms we have more chances that Apple will take these issues seriously. This has been proved with a lot of iOS bugs from time to time. Do we have a guarantee that the issue will actually be fixed? NO. But we can try. See (a) for more into this.
c) I have never said or implied that Apple Music does not cure the issue. I have clearly stated that there are people that do NOT want to subscribe to Apple Music. Still, they do have the right to ask for a fix.
d) I have never stated that "nobody has ever contacted Apple for this matter". What I'm saying (and you cannot seem to understand) is that there a lot of people who still think that by posting about the issue in these forums or the apple discussion forums, they will make a change. That's welcome but I do still believe that we have more chances by using the Apple Feedback forms.

Again and for the last time. You come here just to post your condescending opinion and tell people to DO NOTHING because so far Apple has done nothing on that matter. If you have resigned, and you are so sure that Apple will not do anything, then why come here and criticize us for trying to find ways to solve this? Do you have any better way of handling this to propose, except the Apple Music solution? If yes, please do so. If not, leave us trying to find ways, and do not bother with our hopeless (according to you) efforts.

Maybe you need reading comprehension classes.
point out:
Where I said to do nothing?
Where I said not to use the feedback form?

YEARS old issue. Apple will continue to say "working as intended"

Been going on for at least 2+ years, Apple still won't address it.

See, you are assuming nobody has reported the issue and that reporting it will solve it.
I'm assuming people have, with links to people claiming they have with no response from Apple (and since I reported it myself using feedback).
Places like MR or the discussions can have an answer/fix figured out before Apple actually fixes it. And since this has been going on for years... and we forum posters *have* found out temporary ways to address it, I have more faith in people posting than Apple.
When I picked up my iPhone 7 Plus last year at the Apple store, the salesman I asked about the issue told me that it's a known issue and I didn't have to make a Genius appointment, and then asked me about subscribing to Apple Music...

Basically all i've said is "Join the crowd" (or sub to Apple Music which "cures" the issue)
Cause something that has been an issue through multiple versions of iTunes/Mac OS/iOS is not new. Apple is normally pretty good on fixing bugs, playlist duplication has been pretty much ignored.

You assumptions about what I say and what I mean are really imaginative. I can give you that ! Less than 1 out of 5 people in the "iTunes Duplicating Playlists" threads, over at Apple Discussions and other forums state clearly that they have reported the issue via the Feedback forms. I know a lot of people, friends of mine, or not, people at forums like MR, or sites like 9to5Mac and elsewhere that tend to think that discussing something at the Apple Discussion forums, or the other above mentioned sites will be enough for Apple to solve issues.
I was merely saying that 1) the above is not always the case / it's probably not enough - although I have clearly stated that an MR frontpage article about this issue would be really helpful, 2) we should keep using all the means we have, especially contacting Apple directly and insisting about this issue.

Anyway, let's not keep arguing about this. It's not really worth it.

In the end what we all want is a solution.

p.s. Even better, calling Apple Support and reporting the issue
