PadGadget has discovered that several new App Store titles apparently representing iPad-specific applications have appeared in Apple's web-based iTunes Preview listings. The new titles are frequently versions of existing App Store titles but carrying "XL" or "HD" designations, presumably to designate them as for the iPad, which offers a significantly higher resolution display than the iPhone and iPod touch.
We did a quick scan and were able to find several titles clearly marked as "HD", a common label developers are now using to indicate an iPad specific version of their app. HD is not a universal title for iPad apps, some developers are instead choosing "XL" to denote their iPad version or simply creating a universal build so that both the iPhone and iPad versions are contained in a single app. There are probably many more titles in the database that have been approved by Apple for the iPad that we haven't yet stumbled upon.
Attempting to click through to the individual titles results in dialog boxes popping up to state that the items are currently not available. The titles are also not visible within the iTunes-based version of the iTunes Store.

The fact that the "HD" and "XL" titles are appearing in iTunes Preview suggests that they have already been reviewed and approved for sale by Apple, although it is obviously planning to wait until the iPad is available to customers to deploy them for sale. As a result, their appearance in the company's iTunes Preview listings is likely the result of an oversight on Apple's part.

Labyrinth 2 - Not just rolling a ball around but AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE ball-rolling HD fun!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Looking forward to seeing doodle jump on the ipad, also think games like real football 10 and tiger woods golf will be awesome. Hope they all get ipad updates soon as.

I almost wonder if making the iPad run iPhone applications was a mistake on Apple's part, as it takes away the urgency of having iPad native applications available for the launch date.

I guess this means the ipad/iphone/ipod touch applications will be lumped in together :( If so that will make browsing apps that much worse

I understand the need for developers to split apps up so they can charge for each one seperately, but I'm gonna be annoyed if I have to have 2 of everything and have to remember to sync the right app to the right device.

I would love to see devlopers offer 3 options:
1) iPhone App $1
2) iPad App $1
3) Universal App $2

(And of course, free apps would ONLY offer a Universal version.)

And then you buy the one you want depending on what you need. I don't want app_xyz.iPhone and app_xyz.iPad both showing up in my iTunes app sectioin.

But having multiple version of the same program would lead to a confusing store...right? Not at all! Not if Apple wises up and lists them like they list SD and HD movies on the AppleTV. Find the app and THEN decide which version you want...there's a link to all the versions right there on the page.

Sadly, it doesn't look like that's what they're doing.

EDIT: See the photo? You can decide to rent in SD or rent in HD. They don't list each version as a different movie.

If review units are arriving today, it makes sense a few iPad apps might appear in the store.

I bet if you shop the store on an iPad you'll only see apps that work with it and if you're on an iPhone you won't see iPad-only apps.

So I bet those links ARE working, it's just no one here has an iPad or the newest version of iTunes. Get ahold of either of those and I bet the links are just fine.

You're right...this probably isn't a mistake at all. We just don't have any way of seeing them yet.

Either way, since the thosands of iphone apps (that support the double pixel resolution crap) it isn't going to help much.

Let the good times roll!

We're glad to see the app store start stocking up in anticipation of the iPad release. We'll keep you guys updated on what new apps we see getting posted!

I think the term 'HD' might be a bit misleading for an iPad app, isn't it?

Perhaps some suggestion for the new iPhone? *cough* ;)

Occam's Razor would say that since the ipad is the next device to come out and it is HD res and XL any apps just coming out are for it.

and since Apple opened up the apps reviews and even stated a deadline of this saturday to be eligible for the big grand opening stuff (including perhaps being on demo units in the stores), i'm not shocked to see mentions popping up. Especially in the not as looked at itunes web preview pages.

Just hope they don't get discouraged by the low take-up in the first weeks!

assuming it is low.

i suspect that something in the app coding will prohibit mis syncing just like how you can't put HD video on an ipod touch/phone.

As for pricing, we shall see.

I don't want app_xyz.iPhone and app_xyz.iPad both showing up in my iTunes app sectioin.

depending on how things are coded you might have it like tv shows. in list you see everything but in grid you get a single cover art per season.

since we haven't seen the items in the store yet who is to say how they will or won't handle it.

Ah HD like those HD sunglasses on the infomercial LOL

The article is about them finding the same apps with different names. In other words, 2 different versions.

What possible reason would they need 2 different names for except to list them as seperate items?

As you said, we won't know for sure until we see it, but this news is not encouraging.

Yes, I sure hope they have a separate category just for the iPad Apps.

Navigating the App store to me is a nightmare. Sure hope they improve on that also! ;)

cant they just do what they did for 3.0 and make it say ipad compatible.
Almost all the current iPhone/iPod Touch apps will be able to run on iPad, unfortunately they won't be in the native 1024x768 resolution, and because of the stretched UI controls, they may look funny on a screen that large.

There was a debate thread on Touch Arcade on whether to make a separate iPad version or just a universal binary. Some developers explained that an iPhone app needs at least to be recompiled and tweaked a little to run smoothly on an iPad, and games need to include a different set of resources(mostly images of a higher resolution) for the iPad version, otherwise they will look ridiculous. All these result in a larger size of the binary, and an universal binary would be even larger, so even though the developers are given the freedom to decide whether to use a universal binary or not, some of them have chosen to release a separate version to avoid complains from iPhone/iPod Touch users.

Universal Binary

While it would be awful to buy a universal binary for the ipad and try and sync it to your 8GB iphone if that's what you have along with an iPad and the universal binary includes extra unusable content on your phone.

Here's a thought. Since iTunes can coordinate the syncing except in the case of in device purchases, why couldn't a new version of iTunes sync ONLY the binary component necessary for your device. This is just like it has done for syncing video into the iphone via down-converted videos. It can intelligently decide which to sync.

The 'how to find the right app in the store' quandary is something we will have to find out on launch day!

No way. Who wants to run blocky apps on such a nice screen if they have a choice? I've said it before--it's just a stopgap so you can use for favorite apps on the iPad pending the developer rewriting it.
