I guess this means the ipad/iphone/ipod touch applications will be lumped in together :( If so that will make browsing apps that much worse

I'm sure they will come up with some sort of seperation between the 3 device apps. Because there are some apps that iPhone users can use, which would be useless on an iPod Touch, and obviously iPad Apps that would be useless on iPhone/iPod.

HD is a standard, not a phrase.
Actually, it's just two letters. Even HDTV isn't a "standard."

There are HDTV standards in existence, but the "HD" tag by itself is meaningless. It is true that 1024x768 does not meet or exceed any ATSC standards for HDTV resolutions (there is no such thing as 720p in 4:3 in the standards), but ATSC isn't the only standards body.

I agree that calling apps "XL" or "HD" is stupid. But it's not a misuse of the meaningless label.
Well the iPad is HD, From wikipedia.
It's not.
1280×720 is for a 16:9 aspect, for 4:3 its 960×720, which the ipad is greater than so its HD, just in a 4:3 Aspect ratio.
No. This is the problem with relying on unsourced Wikipedia comments. Neither the applicable ATSC nor DVB standards has a provision for 960x720 HDTV.

I would love to see devlopers offer 3 options:
1) iPhone App $1
2) iPad App $1
3) Universal App $2

That would be nice.

It makes me wonder if they would have some kind of discount for buying an "HD/XL" app if you already own the iPhone version?

I'm a diehard Apple consumer and since the iPhone I've invested in lots and lots of apps. I agree with paying an extra fee for a "HD/XL" version but I feel like some kind of discount would be great.

It seems like a lot of these apps are vector based so conversion should be only a couple clicks to upscale res once things are streamlined I'd imagine. I work in film so I'm nowhere in the developer relm but it seems like a fair amount of apps could be easily converted and hopefully we will see some free upgrades.

I was waiting forever to be one of the first to pre-order the iPad but no USB connectivity or camera has me waiting for reviews on this one. The lack of Flash was a concern also but it seems like Apple is doing a pretty good job of attacking that issue with HTML5, which covers the big companies that can convert but still affects majority of all the Flash sites out there. Oh, what to do?

I think the bigger deal about the HD names is, what else are you gonna call it? sure XL is a possibility but doesn't sound as cool/marketable. And you sure as heck can't use iPad in the name of your app.

So that said, I'm OK with the naming.

HD has had various meanings even within video and screens and encoding. If the screen doesn't quite meet the latest HD standards, I still don't see a problem with apps being called that.
